Mr. Reed was my 7th grade English teacher at Litton. He was a wonderful teacher, and his compassion and love of teaching influenced my decision to become an English teacher as well. I only hope that I can touch as many lives as he did. Mr. Reed, you will be missed.

Mr. Reed was my teacher in the 70's at East High. I remember him fondly because he was always pleasant and helpful as a teacher. To the Reed family you have my sincere condolences.

I so much enjoyed teaching at McGavock High School, especially since Jim taught next door in a classroom beside my classroom and Rose Mary taught in the classroom next door to me on the other side. I loved visiting with them in the hall between classes. I have missed them both all these years since that time. They both were outstanding teachers and outstanding human beings. My sympathy to Rose Mary and family. Dora Yates

Jim was a great teacher whose students enjoyed his class. I really appreciate his willingness to share materials and information when I started teaching. He was a man of many interests and talents. I loved his speaking voice which he used volunteering to read for the public library. His dry wit and great sense of humor made him fun to be around. I shall miss him. Michelle, Sean, Rosemary, and families, you are in my prayers during this time of great loss.

I'll always remember when Jim was giving up being yearbook sponsor at East High and I was taking over...he gave me the 35mm camera and said....here....you'll learn as you go... I did..So I took the camera and learned......I never used a 35 mm camera before....we laughed about that for years. When the East High Alumni facebook page started, Jim posted so many great pictures he took of students in the classroom and on campus during his years at East High that he had saved all these years.. Great memories of "years gone by" at East Nashville High School. When Jim came to the East High All Alumni Reunion in 2007 as a former East teacher, it was great to see him and talk about "teaching at East High in our beginning years of teaching" He was a great teacher and friend that always made you smile.....

Mr. Reed meant so much to so many. I actually just thought of a moment the other day in 10th grade, where he was proofing a essay for me and advised "if you plan on going to college, my advice would be you learn to spell it first"....I had spelled it collage...miss his humor...now I will miss him...Much love to Rosemary and his family...

He made English fun. He never got mad. He was patient and kind. Of all the teachers in my life he was one of my favorites and will never be forgotten. Thank you Mr. Reed for being the teacher we needed as teenagers, cause I know we were a handful.

I had Mr. Reed for English at East Jr. in the 1960's. He was upbeat, down to earth and took an interest in his students.. I remember him taking pictures of his students. I always felt better about life when class was over. He was a wonderful teacher and best teacher of all.

Jim's room was across the hall on the fourth floor at East. His unique sense of humor kept me laughing daily. He was a great teacher and a good friend.

When we were working on the annual, Mr. Reed wouldn't tell us what the L in James L. stood for so we decided Linda, he became James Linda that year and he went right along with it. You will forever have a place in my heart. Our 1975 Grey Eagle annual was dedicated to Mr. Reed, he will be missed. Soar Eagle soar!
