Ramsey Leathers Obituary

Ramsey B. Leathers

Nashville, TN

Ramsey B. Leathers, March 28, 2014. Born October 8, 1920 in Nashville, TN, son of John and Sadie Leathers, he was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Ardis Freeman Leathers.

Survived by daughter, Karen Reddy (John) and sons, Raymond (Jennifer) and Bart (Marilyn); 8 grandchildren, John L. Reddy IV, Jason Reddy (Pamela), Kevin Reddy (Brittany), Bradley Leathers (Alison), Sgt. Frances Leathers Meza, USMC (Yader), Amy Leathers Tidwell (Darren), David Leathers (Julie), Lindsey Leathers and their mother, Linda Leedom; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Ramsey was a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II serving as a glider pilot. It was during glider pilot training in Aberdeen, SD that he met Ardis, the love of his life. Ramsey proposed to her 4 weeks later. They were married in Nashville on May 8, 1943. He served on the AAA Advisory Board. He was a Shriner, Jester and a 33rd Degree Mason. Ramsey attended Peabody College and graduated from the Cumberland School of Law in 1949. He practiced law in Nashville briefly and in 1950, was appointed Probate Master of the Davidson County Court. In 1963, he was appointed Tennessee Supreme Court Clerk, a position that included serving as Clerk to all Tennessee appellate courts, as well as Clerk to the Court of the Judiciary and Clerk to the Board of Professional Responsibility, retiring in 1987. He served in these roles with distinction. Because of his quiet, dry wit and willingness to go out of his way to help, he is remembered even today by members of the Tennessee Bar as a shining example of a court clerk and public servant.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. David's Episcopal Church, 6501 Pennywell Dr., Nashville, TN 37205.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 5 o'clock until 7 o'clock in the evening, at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home and on Thursday from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m., at St. David's Episcopal Church with service to follow at 10:30 a.m.

When I was chief political writer for The Nashville Banner, part of my beat was the Tennessee Supreme Court. I worked daily with Ramsey and he was very helpful to me in finding out when the major high court decisions were going to be released. He was also very helpful in helping me understand the impact and importance of the decisions. When I was named managing editor of The Nashville Banner, Ramsey took me to lunch to celebrate. He was a wonderful and kind gentlemen, very knowledgeable in the law and a pleasure to know. Ramsey's family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Bracey Campbell, Centerville, TN.

When I was licensed in 1965, no one was more helpful to young lawyers than Ramsey. For just one example, back then clerks were able to grant extensions of time to file briefs and, if the applicant had a decent reason, Ramsey was always generous. He was a great gentleman and public servant.

When I was introduced to the Supreme Court in 1974, my father in law, Judge Wm. (Bud) Harwell, took me into Mr. Leathers office and introduced me to him. Judge Harwell told me that "Mr. Clerk" might be the most important man in the state judiciary, and most certainly was the most considerate and helpful. I found that to be unfailingly true. Mr. Leathers was the kind of lawyer we all wish to be, a servant of his profession of which he was so proud. Tennessee will miss him.

My wife and I were privileged to be married in the chambers of the Tennessee Supreme Court. Mr. Leathers was the one who facilitated that and intervened when the Court of Appeals subsequently decided it wanted to hold court at our chosen time and date. I later got to know him in the Economic Club (nee Exchange Club). He was a fine man and noble public servant. May he rest in peace.

Raymond,
I'm sorry I can't be there with you my brother. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. Both of your parents were a big part of our growing up and going to school together as was Mike's and mine. We based a lot of our mischief decisions on what Ramsey & Ardis, Gerald & Norma and Doug & Betty would do to us if we got caught. They all have been a great and positive influence in our lives. We will remember and love them forever! Stay strong my friend.
