Eric Mumaw Obituary

Eric Wayne Mumaw

Goodlettsville, TN

Eric Wayne Mumaw, age 44, passed away in the line of duty on February 2, 2017. He was born on July 22, 1972 in Websterville, Ohio to his loving mother, Esther Marie Connell. In addition to his mother, Eric is survived by his brother Timothy Scott Mumaw; sister Vonda Kay Mumaw Morris (Kenny); aunts and uncles, Joyce Bell, Norma and Robert McFarland, Margie Rogers, and Pam Connell and numerous cousins, friends and fellow officers. Preceeded in death by his step-father Arthur Basil Connell and grandparents, Clarence and Mary Fetter.

Eric was a veteran police officer serving over 18 years. During his time on the force, he received many awards for his bravery and exemplary behavior. He received the following awards and metals: · Exemplary Service Award - 2003: A domestic disturbance call involving a fight between a father and his adult son evolved into a case of Officers Mumaw and Treadwell working closely together to prevent the son from killing himself. Once officers arrived, the 29-year-old man cut his wrists and told them he wanted to die. Both officers engaged in a lengthy dialogue with the man, and at one point had to convince him that charging the officers with the knife with the hope that they would shoot him was not an option. As a result of the officers' careful negotiations with the man, he dropped his knife and was subdued - eventually being taken to the hospital for a psychological evaluation.

· Chief's Coin - 2005 · Chief's Coin - 2006 · Chief's Coin - 2007

· Department Commendation - 4/24/2007: Officer Mumaw was conducting surveillance at a gas station when he saw an SUV suddenly exit the parking lot. A man screamed that his vehicle had been stolen with his infant son still inside the SUV. Officer Mumaw pursued the stolen vehicle until it ran off the road. The suspect was arrested a short time later and the baby, unharmed, was reunited with his father.

· Police Officer of the Month - May, 2010 · Chief's Coin - 2010

· Lifesaving Award - 4/27/2011: Responded to a call of a person armed with a sword attempting to kill his roommate with two fellow officers. As they responded they realized the victim was inside struggling with the suspect who was attempting to kill him. The officers quickly grabbed the suspect and wrestled the sword away from him, literally saving the victims life.

· Chief's Coin - 2011 · Chief's Coin - 2012 · Chief's Coin - 2013

Department Commendation - 4/19/2013: Officer Mumaw's proactive police work undoubtedly saved lives when he stopped to check on a motorist he thought was broken down on Old Hickory Boulevard near an Interstate off- ramp. The driver, however, admitted she was planning to drive the wrong way onto the Interstate in order to end her own life. Officer Mumaw was able to stop this selfish act which could have proven fatal to innocent motorists and their families.

God blesses you all. Thank you for telling what he'd gone through, as some people have the mindless thought that all police officers are villains. I wish he'd been the one to come to my aid times that i needed.
I salute your loved one.

I only met Mumaw a few times while he waited for his police reports to be finalized by myself or one of the other Prisoner Processors. He was always very nice and seemed to be liked by all who met him. He was a great man and is now one of my protectors in heaven. Eric you will be missed by thousands!!!!

I wish I could of met you. I stood with hundreds at your processional, and my heart bleed. I went thru a ceremony such as Officer Mumaw's, when I lost my uncle,a police captain in Jersey. No words could ever cover the expanse of hurt and pain.
May he rest in the arms of God, and may our blessed Mother wrap her arms around his mom..

To Eric's family and community and fellow officers, my heart breaks with yours. I haven't seen him in many years but at one time we loved eachother and we remained friends when life took us separate ways. I always cared deeply for him and I am so grateful to have known him. His spirit and soul were truly one of a kind. He was generous and kind. He was fun and funny. We shared so many laughs and so many hours just talking about life and music and dreams and everything else we could think of. I cannot understand how such a soul could be taken from us ,but I feel that he was as close to an angel as we humans get and God called him home.
Years ago he gave me a hat and I have kept it for 15 years. When I wore it I somehow felt safe and loved. I am so grateful I have that small tangible piece of the hero he became. I will wear that hat and smile because I know now he is in heaven being a guardian angel to the masses. I will smile when I think of him always. You are all in my prayers as you cope with this loss.

Rest peacefully sweet friend. I'll see you again on the other side.

Xoxo,
Mandy
