Elizabeth James Obituary

Elizabeth Royster James

Nashville, TN

Elizabeth Royster James, a light to all who knew her, passed away on September 30, 2015. Elizabeth had a sparkling personality, an incisive wit and a smile that brightened every room. She made every person feel special and was a giving and devoted daughter, sister, aunt, godmother and friend. Elizabeth was beloved.

Elizabeth is survived by her mother, Jeannette Cross of Asheville, North Carolina; father, Dr. Everett James of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; brother, Everett (Gretchen) James of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; sister, Jeannette (Clay) Whitson of Nashville, Tennessee; and nieces and nephews, Clay and Elizabeth Whitson, and Charlotte and Katherine James.

Elizabeth James was an event designer and planner of extraordinary talent. She was widely admired for transforming every occasion into a magical and memorable experience. Elizabeth pushed beyond the bounds of the expected and was mindful of every small detail. This was rooted in her ability to listen perceptively to every client and in her deep desire to capture their ideas and transform them into once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Before forming her own company, Elizabeth was the director of the International Steeplechase Group, an organization that developed global steeplechase meets. Elizabeth also formerly owned and operated the Company Company, a catering business in Atlanta, Georgia.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1967, Elizabeth was a native of Nashville. She was a graduate of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989, and Franklin Road Academy in 1985. She also attended the Harpeth Hall School.

Devoted to numerous nonprofit groups, Elizabeth was a board member of Carolina Women's Leadership Council and Friends of Warner Parks and previously volunteered with Cumberland Heights; Frist Center for the Arts; Iroquois Steeplechase; Land Trust for Tennessee; Nashville Food Project; Second Harvest Food Bank; STARS; and St. Augustine's Church.

Elizabeth had strong faith and a great love of the outdoors and of every creature great and small. That love inspired her steady willingness to help any person in any circumstance. This grace extended well beyond her family and friends as she frequently volunteered to feed the hungry, treating every person with dignity.

Elizabeth James will be long remembered for the immeasurable gifts she gave and for the deep impression she has left on the hearts of all who knew her.

A service to celebrate Elizabeth's remarkable life will be held on Sunday, October 4th at 2 p.m., at Benton Chapel at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, at 21st and Scarritt Place. A visitation will be held immediately prior to the service beginning at 12:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Carolina Women's Leadership Council (University of North Carolina), Friends of Warner Parks and Nashville Food Project.

I dreamed about Elizabeth one night since she died, and she was smiling that beautiful smile She didn’t say anything. She just smiled. May she Rest In Peace. I will always miss her, but I know Nette And Gene are taking good care of her now.

Such an honor to know & work with Elizabeth. All the video projects we worked on together- you gave me amazing opportunities and I wish I would have told you more how blown away I was to work on your team. Sweet girl- may you be in peace. This world was so blessed to have you for a moment.

Speechless, stunned and without the adequate words to express how incredibly saddened I am over the death of your precious Elizabeth. I have walked in your shoes but in a different way. The loss of a child shakes us to our core. It is not the way life is supposed to be ordered. Parents first and then children. A thought from Dr. Seuss has brought me great comfort "do not cry because it is over, smile because it happened". It has helped me deal with the sudden death of my son. With prayers and sympathy, MaryCatherine Kurzenski (UNC-GAA)

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!"

"Gone where?"

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!" there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: 'Here she comes!"

She was so many wonderful things but best of all she had sass and gumption with style - only she could pull that off. She'd be the one to tell you - kindly - that you had toilet paper hanging out of the back of your very proper skirt, your zipper was down, or the person you just went on and on about was now standing right behind you. She shared the best and the lowest moments and she made you laugh all the while. I remember her with a raised eyebrow and a quick comment out of the side of her mouth. What a glorious woman - a touchstone - and an inspiration for going the extra mile, finding humor in every situation - and for being human. Thank you Elizabeth for touching my life early on in college - I feel blessed.

October 5, 2015

Somehow this all seems so unreal. We the Weigels all sat around and had a trip down memory lane with special times with the James family. Our memories were so delicious and many brought rounds of laughter and spatters of tears. We go far back to little ones at Harding----Carolina Blue that runs deep---Saint George's---- and parties , parties, parties. Through all those times our Elizabeth.s smile sealed the deal. Our hearts are broken and our love and prayers surround you always,

This is a sad day for all of us as Elizabeth was like a member of our family and others felt the same way. She planned many wonderful parties for us but I will always remember a special family Christmas party two years ago with crafts, chocolates, Santa, photos and even (artificial) snow falling on the guests from the balcony as they arrived. We marveled: "how did Elizabeth do that?" She was lots of fun for everyone she was around. Our deep respect, condolences and prayers to the wonderful James family. Lee and Mary Barfield

There are no words for the sadness of this loss. This day has been dark. My heart hangs low. I adored her. Elizabeth walked me/us through every detail of our wedding along with my parents. She was a true advocate for her brides. She called, she left messages, she looked out for me, she perfected every detail. We laughed a lot and we collaborated as a group. She was outstanding and beautiful, sharp and clever. I miss her already.

"I Did Not Die"

Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and forever cry.
I am not there. I did not die.
