Manny BUZZELL Obituary

BUZZELL, Manny D. "Papa" "Pop Pop"Age 77. Passed away at his home in Brentwood, surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 21, 2010. Manny was born on November 4, 1932 to Frank and Helen Buzzell in Jamestown, ND, and had one sibling, big sister Jean (Ulferts). During World War II, his family moved to Van Nuys, CA, where his father, who was an electrician/pilot, worked for Lockheed and helped develop the P38 into a viable fighter. After the war, they returned to Jamestown in 1945. Manny graduated from Jamestown High School in 1951, and from Jamestown College in 1955 with a BS degree in Economics/Business Administration. Following graduation, he joined the Army and served in the 3rd Armored Division's 83rd Recon Battalion from August, 1955 to May, 1957 in Ft. Knox, KY, and also served in Budingen, Germany during 1956-57. After marrying Patricia (Patti) Harr on June 30, 1957, they moved to Chicago, IL. He began work with Continental Casualty Company in July, 1957. A year later, their first child, Barbara Ann, was born. He was transferred to the Detroit office in 1960, and their other two children, Jacquelyn Jean (1962) and Steven Eric (1965) were born. In 1969, he was transferred back to Chicago and in 1973, in an effort to reduce his business traveling, took a job with Ingram, Armistead, and Wallace in Nashville, TN. His business travel increased, but he loved it. In 1994, he was asked to take the lead in designing the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts in England and Wales, which necessitated a two-year residency in London, England, where he and Patti made many close friends, and were members of the American Church in London. He was also an Underwriting Member of Lloyd's of London from 1983 through 1993. He retired, allegedly, in 2001, but remained as a Consultant as Vice Chair of Advanced Risk Management Services and President of Willis Re Nashville until 2003. He and Patti were members of Christ Lutheran Church for over 35 years, and joined the Brentwood United Methodist Church in 2009 to be closer to home. Surviving Manny, in addition to his wife of 53 years, Patti, are: sister, Jean; sons-in-law, Terry (Barb) Mayo, and Mark (Jackie) Southerland and daughter-in-law, Berenda (Steve) Buzzell; and his son-in-law's wife, Yvonne. He has five grandchildren, Daylan Mayo, Danielle (Mayo) Grant, Jennifer (Crane) Searcy, Nicholas Buzzell and Daniel Buzzell. He also has five great-grandchildren, Kayla Searcy, Brayden Teasley, Carson Searcy, Brecken Grant and Lofton Grant, as well as nieces, Jan (Ulferts) Stewart, Jay Ulferts, Lori (Ulferts) Kedrowski and David Ulferts, and great-nieces and nephews, Sarah, Jessie, Jay, Jill and Anna. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jackie; and his two Yellow Labs, Sasha and Jenny. Manny was active in many various groups, including Brentwood Library, Williamson County Library, Regional Library Board (9 counties), Friends of the Library (locally and state), the Robert I. Moore Sunday School Class at Brentwood United Methodist Church, and the "Friday Night Titans Group." He served on the Board of Jamestown College, Jamestown, ND; Piedmont Liability Trust Board (the Insurance Trust of the University of Virginia Medical Staff) and Consensus Management Corporation Board (provides Insurance Company services to rural hospitals in six Western states). Bishop Robert Spain and Rev. Kaye Harvey will conduct a Memorial service celebrating Manny's life at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Brentwood United Methodist Church, located at 309 Franklin Road in Brentwood, TN. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until time of the service. Inurnment will be at the Brentwood United Methodist Church Columbarium. Honorary Pallbearers are Mark Southerland, Daylan Mayo, Matt Grant, Eric Searcy, Tom Cummings, Chuck Scott, the "Friday Night Titans Group:" Eric & Stephanie Randa, Jim & Debbie Caughorn, Sue Brown, Gary & Karen Glass, Duane Herbold and the Robert I. Moore class. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to two of Manny's favorite charities: Nashville Rescue Mission, 639 Lafayette St., Nashville, TN 37203 or the Nashville Humane Society, 213 Oceola Avenue, Nashville, TN 37209. "A heart is judged not by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others." Manny was loved by all who knew him. AUSTIN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, (615) 377-0775.

Patti and family,

We have very fond memories of Manny for the almost 5 years we spent in Nashville, over 25 years ago. Manny taught me a lot about the insurance business during that time. I am sorry that I had not kept in touch for all those years.

May your memories of him last for all of your lives and may his great spirit inspire us all in our lives.

Patricia and family:
We join with those who have known Manny much longer than us but we wish to send condolences to you upon the news of his death. This news seems so sudden since seeing him in May he looked the picture of health. Glad to know that you both were abel to make the Journey to the Homeland.

Buzzell Family and Friends,

I was at an insurance convention once and ran into an old friend of Manny's who asked me what I did at Corroon and Black. I proudly told the man that I worked with Manny Buzzell. The gentleman quickly informed me that no one works with Manny. It took me a while to figure it out but he was right, no one worked with Manny because you could not keep up with him. Regardless, it was the opportunity of a lifetime to try.

Dear Patti & Family,
My memories of Manny were always on our South Dakota hunts as that was the only time I got to experience his charm and great companionship. What a wonderful Father as well since the boys were often tagging along. His wit, patience, fondness for life will be truly missed. You were a better person just hanging around him and it was a true compliment if he considered you a friend. My prayers go out to you and the family on the passing of this wonderful man.
