Stephen McREDMOND Obituary

McREDMOND, Stephen Age 59 of Nashville, died suddenly at his home on March 28, 2011. He is survived by his cherished partner of 35 years, Matthew Cushing, whom he married in New Hampshire on October 9, 2010. Other survivors include his beloved sisters, Anita McRedmond Sheridan (Mark) of Nashville, Linda McRedmond Orsagh (Dick) of Atlanta; other siblings, many nieces and nephews, and countless loving friends. Stephen was born in Nashville and raised on the McRedmond Farm. He was a graduate of Father Ryan High School and Webster College in St. Louis. As a young man, he lived and studied in Paris, and later in Boston, where he worked at the Museum of Fine Arts. In 1978, he returned to his Nashville roots and devoted his life to family and community, working to preserve the family farm and business, McRedmond Brothers. Stephen was a lover of nature and an enthusiastic supporter of the arts. He served on the Greenways Commission and the Sub-Area Committee of the Nashville Planning Commission. He was a supporter of the Land Trust for Tennessee, the Cumberland River Compact, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and a leader in the effort to clean up and restore Mill Creek. Stephen was dedicated to preserving Nashville's architecture and heritage. He was widely recognized as a visionary in the rebirth of Germantown and the redevelopment of the Neuhoff site, home to the Jazz Workshop and other artistic and business endeavors. He was a supporter of the Civic Design Center and the Nashville Cultural Arts Project. He served on the board of Historic Nashville, Inc., Nashville Jazz Workshop, and the Actors Bridge Ensemble. Together with Matthew, Stephen was a tireless supporter of many Nashville charities and civic organizations, including Nashville Cares, Artrageous, the Human Rights Campaign, Room in the Inn, and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Stephen's life today, at the Home Place on the McRedmond Farm at 915 Massman Drive. Visiting will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m., followed by a remembrance ceremony at 4 p.m. Interment will be at 5 p.m., at Calvary Cemetery on Lebanon Pike. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Stephen's memory to the Land Trust for Tennessee, PO Box 23473, Nashville, TN, 37202 or to a charity of one's choice. August 22, 2012

To the family and friends of Stephen McRedmond. I just today read of Mr. McRedmond's life and death. My father died in June, and I was trying to find pictures of the old Neuhoff building where my Dad worked for 30 years. I found the many stories of the great effort and all the time, thought, knowledge and planning Mr. McRedmond put into his project of revitalizing the Neuhoff building. What a foreseeing and understanding person Mr. McRedmond must have been. I have been so sadden today to learn of his death, although it has now been about 18 months. We are all connected in some way and reading these stories and internet postings I feel connected.
• I am very active in my own little area being green, having flowers and natures beauty surrounding me everywhere.
• I am very much in favor of keeping as much of our history as we can, in buildings as well as in books. I am always deeply sadden when old building with history and early 1900 era structures must be torn down in the name of progress.
• My Dad worked at Neuhoff for 30 years.
• I lived less than 3 blocks from Mr. McRedmond on Kermit Drive for 32 years! (Massman into Goodbar…right on Kermit off Goodbar)
• My brother was Lee Gannon and his life partner was one of the founders of Nashville Cares. My brother died in 1996 from AIDS. He also loved the beauty of the urban areas and filled his little corner of the earth with flowers and trees on Fatherland at 7th Ave So. In east Nashville.
Nashville lost an urban pioneer when they lost Stephen McRedmond and I just want to express my sympathy to his friends and family. With deepest sympathy…Gail Curtis

I met Stephen at an extremely volatile time in my life when the world had no idea how bad the recession was going to be. He offered his time and assistance without hesitation or need for anything despite the extreme conditions that surrounded my visit. He showed me around Neuhoff and told me what he had envisioned it to become. After walking out of the lecture hall 3 Red Tailed Hawks flew overhead and I knew without question that I was in the presence of a King. Humble, decent and always willing to serve. He is what we should all strive to be.

I first met Stephen last May at the Homeplace as he and his family referred to it. Such a tragic loss of a truly wonderful human being. My faith in humanity was restored after meeting Stephen, his partner Matthew, sisters Linda & Anita, and her husband Mark during my time in Nashville last year. They all touched my life in ways they may never understand; as their generosity, warmth, and compassion transcends conventional modern day thinking.

My heart goes out to Matthew and the rest of the McRedmond family during this very difficult time. I hope and pray that the Lord will provide comfort, plus give you the strength and wisdom to carry on. Stephen was truly one of a kind, and will be greatly missed by all who ever knew him. He was a most generous, caring, giving, and loving soul.

With deepest sympathy...I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.

I first visited Stephen and Matthew when I worked with State Parks at their cabin with a friend from the Department's Natural Heritage Section who was working with him to identify threatened and endangered species on his land. He was a committed conservationist active in preservation of natural and historical resources. I'd see him over the years at events for the Tennessee Environmental Council, Nashville Cares, and HRC. He always greeted me as if he had just seen me yesterday! His light, love, joyous and kind spirit will be missed. Nashville will miss his leadership but we are all better for his having passed this way. My heartfelt condolences to Matthew, his family and many friends.

Although I had not seen Stephen since our Father Ryan days, many years ago, my memory of him is borne out by all who knew him in recent years. He was indeed a kind, warm, intelligent young man with a wonderful sense of humor. And it is clear from the guest book entries that he has had an enduring, positive impact on the Nashville community and beyond. That is pleasing to see, but I am saddened to know that his mission of making this a better place for all of us has been cut so short.
Matthew, you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time of profound loss.

I was overwhelmed by sadness and shock when I heard the news of Stephen's tragic death. He was a beautiful man, of rare charm and generousity, of humour and charisma whose memory will endure in the arts institutions he helped to create and sustain. His spirit will surely survive in the hearts and minds of his friends from all stages of his valuable life.

It is perhaps a measure of the impact he made upon people that I who only met him once - over a period of days in the company of Matthew) in November 1977- feel a personal sense of loss.

Stephen and I talked again at length a couple of times again a year ago and as we talked time fell away: he sounded just as he had been all those decades ago.

Most of all I want to send my heartfelt condolences to his life partner, Matthew Cushing, for whom Stephen's passing will be a greater blow than to anyone.
May all the memories of his "marriage of true minds" to Stephen be a lasting source of consolation and comfort,. -

Nicholas de Jongh, London UK.
