Shelton HARRISON Obituary

HARRISON, Mr. Shelton E. - Entrepreneur, automobile dealer, music concert promoter and artist manager, philanthropist, champion boxer, and devoted and faithful husband and father died on February 21, 2013, in Nashville, TN. He was 78. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis, TN for 38 years. He loved the church, the people, and especially enjoyed working with the children in little league sports and the day school. A graduate of the University of Memphis (UM), Harrison owned and operated several automobile dealerships in the metropolitan areas of Memphis, Nashville, and Jackson, TN, including Chevrolet, Chrysler, and Toyota. In a career spanning five decades, he gained renown among auto dealers and salespeople as a motivational speaker and trainer; received numerous business and industry awards; and remained friends with his professors and mentors, including Dr. H. J. Markle, Dr. Wayland Tonning, Dr. Eugene Smith, Coach W. C. Rook, and Dr. Robert Wood. Alongside the auto business, Harrison rose to prominence as a music promoter in the 1970s and 80s. Harrison's hundreds of concerts featured performers such as Dottie West, Floyd Cramer, Marty Robbins, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn and many more. Harrison's philanthropic endeavors included his 1976 creation of the Shelton Harrison Pro-Celebrity Golf Tournament to benefit St. Jude Hospital, which event included golfers such as Lou Graham and other sports celebrities including Stan Musial and Bear Bryant. Harrison provided financial and logistical support to annual events such as the Liberty Bowl and organizations such as Christ United Methodist Church (CUMC). He established the Shelton and Brucene Harrison perpetual scholarship at UM and served on the boards of CUMC, Christ Methodist Day School, Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission, and other organizations. Harrison also supported the U.S. Navy Base in Millington through numerous events for Morale, Welfare, and Recreation. Originally from Arkansas, Harrison excelled in athletics from an early age with the love and encouragement of his aunt Ann and uncle Shirley Harrison. Harrison won over a dozen boxing championships, including two Golden Gloves championships, and fought professionally in New York, Detroit, and elsewhere. He then returned to Memphis to care for his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emery Harrison, and was recruited by Dr. Cecil C. Humprey to coach UM boxing. Harrison later coached U.S. Navy and Marine boxing as well as little league baseball and basketball. He helped recruit scholar-athletes such as Dale Brady for the UM and Vanderbilt University football, basketball, and baseball teams. Harrison is remembered for his always-inspiring enthusiasm, his magnanimity, his gift of encouragement to others, and his selfless life of service. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Brucene; daughter, Camille; and son, Shelley. To celebrate Shelton's life, the family asks that any memorials be made to a charity of donor's choice. A private service was held on February 25th, 2013. WILLIAMSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 615-794-2289.

Ill always remember Mr. Harrisons winsome and upbeat personality. Whenever I was in his home or presence I never felt ignored but was always engaged in meaniful conversation whether serious or comical. Most of all he was a man that had a big heart, always willing to share what he had, and an advocate of hard work. I learned a lot from him in those times, and still think of him often. R.I.P.

Mr. Harrison was a very special person who loved his family, life and Memphis State Univ..
He holds a very special place in my life. In 1964, while he was Sales Manager at Capital Chevrolet in Nashville, Mr. Harrison recruited me to play football at Memphis State. Thanks to Mr. Harrison's encouragement and direction I had a successful football career at MSU (U of M).
Mr. Harrison touched many lives with his positive attitude and I was truly blessed in so many ways by his kindness and generosity. Thank You Mr. Harrison.

Your Dad's personality was his own social media, a sales and marketing genius! He loved the music side of his biz, and sincerely loved everyone he worked with. He was a magnet to the stars. They all loved him & would do anything for him. I was a wide eyed, greenhorn, hillbilly kid reaching for the stars. Shelton always shook my hand and looked me in the eye and made me feel as important as any of the stars. I remember riding to Memphis on Dottie West's bus to do a show for him featuring her, Don Williams & Marty Robbins. A great memory for me. I also have fond memories of Shelton while doing shows with Dickey Lee and Jim Ed. What a fine gentleman! Richard Carpenter, Nashville Drummer, Singer-Songwriter

Today is June 3 2016 the day of boxer Muhammad Ali's passing. I just wanted on this day to give condolences to the Harrison family because I just found out today. I remember having dinner with Mr Harrison and another associate about 15 years ago. He told great stories about the music and boxing promotion I'll never forget. Upon hearing of Ali's death it reminded me of Mr. Harrison sitting down with us telling how Ali would call him looking to do some of the not so easy behind the scenes work of finding suitable challengers and arrangements. Mr Harrison was a major inspiration for me being a young man at that time he gave me a shot at doing business in relation to Financing manufactured homes. I owe it to him to work as hard as I can and keep my energy up even when things are tough, because I witnessed him do it having health challenges back then yet persevering for many years there after.

Shelton was an amazing man that I greatly miss. Not only was he a friend, but also a mentor. He inspired me through his words of wisdom and his actions spoke just as loud. I learned not only to be a man but to be a good man with values and morals that were taught and received from Shelton's life example. He was a father figure to me and welcomed me into his home as an extended part of his family. I cannot express the deepest of sympathy for the loss we have all suffered. He touched many lives, not only in the car industry but as well as in the music industry and as a boxing coach to young teens he inspired to do their best and reach for their goals. His don't quit, never give up, and push yourself attitude has helped many young men such as myself to grow into responsible adults. The world is a dimmer place without his lifelight shining down upon all of us. He touched so many lives and words are difficult to come by to express the deep loss but even more difficult to express the deepest of condolences to his wife and family. My heart is broken for I was unable to attend the memorial service on February 25, 2013 and didnt learn of his passing until 2015. I never got to tell him face to face how much he meant to me. Perhaps these kind words will reach him and I will know by the peaceful feeling within my heart. Thank you very much for everything Shelton. I love you and miss you more than you will ever know.

"There are those who try hard to impress then there those who leave lasting impressions without ever trying"

In addition to the virtues listed in his beautiful obituary, I would add that Mr. Shelton was an amazing and selfless friend. If memory serves me correctly, my father, while shopping for a car, suggested to Mr. Harrison my love for Glenn Campbell...I was all of 20 years old. It wasn't shortly after that I received a phone call from Mr. Harrison offering me two "extra" tickets for my boyfriend (now husband) and me to see his concert in Jackson, Tn. AND to attend Glenn's private party afterwards. It was a night to behold!! I will NEVER forget your kindness, Mr. Shelton Harrison.....It is clear that my dear friend, Camille gets her beautiful soul honestly. She is the child of two amazing parents. Godspeed to the Harrison Family ~

I had the honor to meet Shelton Harrison working with him on one of the most successful endeavors the Memphis Jaycees had the privilege to be involved in.
I assumed the Presidency of the Memphis Jaycees after Shelton had invited the Jaycees to work with him on the Bicentennial Celebration in 1976 by having a Pro-Celebrity Golf Tournament and Star Studded Concert.
On my first day in office I came in to find Shelton's lovely wife, Brucene, working in a closet on details concerning the Celebration. I wasn't going to have anyone working in a closet, much less this lovely lady. Changes were made and the first person to come in with that famous ear to ear grin to thank me was Shelton. That meeting was the beginning of a life long friendship.
The best way for me to describe Shelton was the night of the Concert. We were taking turns introducing the Entertainers and their bands for the two or three songs each one did. The last performer was Charlie Pride. He looked at me, then his watch,(it was 4:30 AM) and that smile came across his face and he said, "It's been a great night, we've helped a lot of people and lot of people have enjoyed the show. Lets do this together."
I'm sure those in Heaven are enjoying Shelton's shows. I know I was lucky enough to enjoy him, his generosity,(only Jaycee President to have a car to drive for a year)and his friendship.
I will miss you.

Shelton Harrison was always known for being an astute businessman and a loving husband and father a promoter of some of the biggest concerts in the Mid-South. Larger than life in so many ways.
He was also a kind, caring and giving man.
When my wife Tana was run down by a drunk driver and become a high level quadriplegic our lives were devistated. Camille and Shelley's Father, through the goodness of his heart, Shelton gave us a new Chevy van for transportation. It was equipped with a wheelchair lift and was an absolute life saver for us. Though Tana has passed, I will always hold a warm place in my heart for the kindness and thoughtfulness of Mr Shelton Harrison and his family. May God's grace always light your path and shine on your lives.
