Robert Arceneaux Obituary

Robert Elton Arceneaux

NEW ORLEANS - Family and friends mourn the passing of Robert Elton Arceneaux (age 58) of New Orleans who died unexpectedly from a heart attack on April 2 at his home in Old Metairie.

A native of Lafayette, Mr. Arceneaux was a beloved son and brother, and a friend to many. He graduated from Cathedral-Carmel High School in Lafayette, the University of Southwest Louisiana (now UL Lafayette), and the Paul Hebert School of Law at LSU ('82). He was managing editor of the LSU Law Review (Order of the Coif) and he served as a clerk for the Louisiana Supreme Court.

Mr. Arceneaux's legal career spanned four decades wherein he successfully represented clients in Louisiana and across the country, shining brightest in appellate work. In the early 1980's he worked as an associate in the practice of Judge Mack Barham becoming a partner in what became Barham and Arceneaux in 1990, his professional home for a decade until the firm disbanded. His expertise included law pertaining to local government, property, commercial and personal injury, and he had extensive class-action experience. Robert was highly regarded in the legal community, by both colleagues and judges, for his tremendous intellect, critical reasoning and deft persuasion. That community recognized him several years ago as a Best Lawyer in the category of appellate advocacy. He successfully argued before the Louisiana Supreme Court, state appellate courts, and federal courts across the country. Never detached from the soul and substance of his cases he was fearless and unrelenting in his pursuit of justice for individuals who had been harmed by institutions too large for them to take on themselves.

Friends, family and close associates treasured his sly and wicked sense of humor, his playfulness, his deep sweetness, his sometimes- unorthodox (but always formidable) reasoning, and his wide-ranging interests. Following graduation from law school, Robert instantly fell in love with New Orleans, enamored of its history, beauty, food and joie de vivre—and not incidentally its unspoken credo of live-and-let-live, live-and-let-loose. He became his truest self there and developed profoundly deep friendships as he also did all across the country.

Robert was a gourmand and a generous host; an eyebrow-raised observer of news and social currents; a stickler for details (an inheritance from his librarian mother); a platinum-level traveller with a fascination with the golden age of trans-Atlantic ocean sailing; a Broadway and film aficionado who dabbled in producing along with other business ventures; a tech wizard before that was fashionable; and a connoisseur and collector of Arts and Crafts pottery and furniture.

His annual gift of homemade biscotti to dozens of family members and friends came to signify Christmas as much as Santa's on lawns. Sadly, like Robert himself, they will never be duplicated- or at least not to his high standards. The world is a better place because he was in it, and will now be less for his passing.

His siblings, Donald J Arceneaux, Claudia A Wallace, Mary A Castille and her husband Michael F Castille, his four nephews, one niece, three great nephews and two great nieces survive him. Additional survivors significant to Robert are his brother Donald's life partner Mariam Kent and Donald's previous wife Ginger Arceneaux. He also cherished his extended family and his many close friends he considered family.

His parents Claude and Heloise Arceneaux of Lafayette, LA predeceased him.

Per Robert's wishes, a private celebration of his life will be held at a future date.

Donations in his memory may be made to Louisiana Hemophilia Foundation, 3636 Sherwood Forest Suite 390, Baton Rouge, LA 70816 or the website lahemo.org.

My deepest sympathy to the Arceneaux family for the loss of Robert. He is such a wonderful person. Looking at his picture above, you see that big genuine smile. I would see Robert when he would come in town to visit his mother. I was her caretaker. I was always greeted with the biggest, warmest, hug ever. Such a sweet soul, the world is poorer with him no longer in it.

Well Robert, I just got the news from our friend Gail Wise and what can I say! Saddened and shocked! So sorry to get this bad news for I had just spoke with you several months ago. And true to form you were willing to help a friend in need. You, Judge Barham and Gail were always so patient with me and y'all were the greatest bosses a paralegal could have ever worked for. Always enjoyed our discussions about the movies, food and religion. Of course with my being a JW you didn't have a choice about who steered the conversation on religion. But I knew one thing you were way more intelligent than I would ever be! You will be missed but never forgotten. I never told you how much I appreciated your patience with me. I will do that first thing when we meet again. Many prayers for you, your family and friends at this time.

The first thing that comes to my mind after spending 10 years working with, and knowing Robert, is his compassion. He was truly compassionate about everything he did. BEST biscotti ever! May you rest in peace, Robert.

So sorry to hear about Robert. I had the distinct pleasure of going to law school with him and clerking with him our first year out. He was a good and decent man in a world which needs more of them. My wife, Claire, and I send our condolences.

Oh, my sweet Robert, my first "boss" when you were just an associate at Barham & Churchill ... how far you rose! Eventually, you were a name partner of Barham & Arceneaux. It was a privilege to work with you and for you. You were kind; you were sincere; you were smart; you were witty; and you were so very, very patient. May God give your family comfort and peace, as well as the strength to carry on and live by the example you showed to all. RIP, Robert

I always looked forward to Robert's biscotti (though I bake fancy desserts, my biscotti were never quite as good as his.....) and to his charming, warm, wry, utterly engaging company. I am a professional pianist, and I remember well doing a little private concert for Robert, with the last piece being 'Clair de lune'--his favorite.

I was very saddened when I saw this in the paper today. Obviously not something I was expecting to see. Robert opened my mind up to things that I was not always ready or willing to accept, and he allowed me to be the person I am. I will always remember him and cherish our friendship. His memory will always be with me, as well as the lessons he taught. Peace.

My sympathy goes out to the family during your time of grief. May God's loving-kindness comfort you and help you through this difficult time. (Psalm 119:50,76)

I knew Robert for two decades, as a friend and colleague. Our trust and caring for one another was true and real. Robert was a person of great dignity, grace, perception, intellect, humor, irony, and a joy for life. Robert represented me with fierce dedication and kind determination. He worked hard to do so with his friends and colleagues Margaret Woodward and Justice Pascal Calogero. Robert won justice in difficult and challenging situations by finding and articulating simple arguments. When I learned of his passing this week, I was deeply pained and saddened. I loved Robert as a person of goodness and decency. To Robert's family and friends, please accept my deepest condolences for your loss of this fine man. Robert, my friend, I will miss you.

This is so very, very hard. Robert, we were close friends from high school through my graduate & your law school. We debated together. We lived together. We laughed, ate, cried, and grew together. You gave me so much, especially of yourself. Thank you for being part of my life. You remain in my heart forever. Mary, may you and the entire Arceneaux family, feel God's comforting embrace during this time of sadness. And, Robert, keep the music turned up, the stove hot and two wine glasses on the table! We'll visit when I get there. Until then, enjoy, my friend. Enjoy.
