Gregory Stone Obituary

The director of LSU's Coastal Studies Institute, he died at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011. He was 53, a native of Belfast and resident of Baton Rouge. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Monday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. until memorial service at noon, conducted by Betsy Irvine. He is survived by his wife, Ann F. Stone; son, Carter-Morgan Derek Stone; brothers, Ian Wade Stone and Alan Derek Stone; and sister, Janice Margaret Buchanan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Derek Robert Stone, and Margaret Mary Cathleen McFadden Stone. Dr. Greg Stone was a very well respected member of the LSU School of the Coast and Environment faculty who served as Director of the Coastal Studies Institute, in addition to teaching and advising graduate students in the department of oceanography and coastal sciences. He graduated with a B.S. degree (Honors) from the University of Ulster (Ireland), a M.S. degree from the University of West Florida, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1990. After serving as a research associate and visiting professor at the University of West Florida, Dr. Stone accepted a position in the department of geography and anthropology at LSU. In 1997, he accepted a faculty position in the department of oceanography and coastal sciences and became a member of the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI). His interest in the oceanic processes that drive changes in coasts of different types made him a perfect fit for CSI and its 50-year history of similar research work. Dr. Stone quickly established himself as an internationally respected coastal scientist who produced cutting-edge research and attracted millions of dollars of research support to LSU. As part of his research, he and the CSI Field Support Group developed a series of offshore instrumented stations to monitor wind, waves, and currents that impact the Louisiana coast. These Wave-Current Information System (WAVCIS) stations produce data that may be accessed on the Internet and used by coastal scientists, industry, state agencies, sports fishermen, and others. This program, a product of Dr. Stone's vision, has received international recognition for its technical innovation and scientific value. In addition to being an outstanding researcher, Dr. Stone was an excellent teacher and advisor of graduate students. His classes provided students with a sound quantitative understanding of coastal change and he prepared his graduate students for life after LSU by assigning them significant research problems, supporting them through graduation, and providing knowledgeable supervision. Dr. Stone always projected a genuine sense of happiness and feeling of accomplishment when he talked about his students and they loved working for him in the educational environment he created. He was a valued colleague to his peers at LSU and around the world. He will be sincerely missed as an excellent coastal researcher and friend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may be made to LSU Foundation Coastal Studies Institute Unendowed Account. Checks should be payable to The LSU Foundation, in notes section indicate LSU School of Coast & Environment, Coastal Studies Institute. Address: LSU Foundation 3838 W. Lakeshore Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70808. Donations may also be given online at www.lsufoundation.org/contribute.

Dear Ann and Carter,

I only just learned from Greg Veeck about Greg's passing. Greg's office was next door to mine during those early LSU years. I always enjoyed that wry sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye. He was a great colleague and a role model to the rest of us as to how one should be as a grad student mentor.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this holiday season.

Very sorry to hear of the loss of Greg. I was a graduate student at the University of West Florida from 1988-1990 and worked often with Greg and Dr. Morgan in the field on their collaborative work there in Pensacola. They were both head and shoulders above the rest and were excellent mentors. He treated me well not only as a student but as a friend. I remember his wit and his friendly nature to all. I know he will be greatly missed.

Very sad to learn of Dr. Stone's passing today. It has been over a year since last we talked. I owe him my career. His patience with me in undergrad as I discovered a passion for the Coastal and Marine environment and then his nomination of me to spend a year on exchange in England. He was patient and demanding as any good mentor should be. He will be missed. My condolences for his family.

I would not be where I am now if it were not for Greg Stone. As a recent immigrant and young student I served coffee and washed dishes at LSU's student union. Every afternoon Greg passed by for a coffee. He challenged me to take his coastal geomorphology class and other geography classes. He pushed me to publish my first journal article as an undergraduate. Then, he allowed me to wonder for a few years before once again advising me for a master's degree. He also gave me many lessons on how to advise students - -I use them today, on and off the squash court (where we played often). That finally led to another degree. I think of Greg often and give my thanks to him. Thanks Greg, your careful, demanding, and friendly manner means much to me and is replicated time and time again.

Ann, Carter, and family in Ireland,
Greg and I shared an office at West Florida, and he was so helpful in my transition from Northern Ireland. Later when I decided to pursue a PhD he was encouraging and supportive. I was so fortunate to have worked with Greg, Bill Carter and Jim Morgan. Hope they are reunited and talking morphodynamics. Cherish the fond memories.

Ann and Porter,

My thoughts and prayers for Dr. Stone. He was such a wonderful and a fun person to work for. During my 2 years as his graduate assistant I learnt so much from him. He always had a jovial and warm personality and was always ready to help when in need. In my life time I came across very few people who had such a passion for what they did and Dr. Stone was one of them. He will always be remembered and loved.

Greg was a great person indeed. I knew him (he had an office three doors down from me)while I was a grad student at ISU and while I taught for a year (1994-1995) in Geography. Our son was born about the same time as Carter. We traded stories about that and immigrant experiences (Ireland and Soth Africa)and he offered me great encouragement as I searched for a tenure track opening. I remember his advice well, "Darrell if you get an interview you will get an offer"--he was correct, I am 2-2. Our paths crossed when I visited LSU. A great guy indeed with a wickedly charming smile. Leonie and my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Sincerely, Darrell

Dear Ms Stone, You have the sympathy of those of us who dwell along the Gulf Coast. Dr Stone was well respected in our Coastal community for his insight and standing firm for what he believed was right. We have very few like him that were bold enough to speak the truth about the Oil disaster. he was a very humble hero amongst us all...
May you find the strength to go forward and allow time to be the healer of your pain...
God Bless...

Please accept my profound sympathy on your loss. I took an undergraduate elective class with Dr. Stone in 1989. He was so dedicated. He worked tirelessly for our coastline and the people affected there. His wave research will save countless lives. Years after that class he was kind enough to assist me with an international law paper. I am stunned by this news and will pray for you and your family. He was a great scientist who cared so much for others.
