A celebration of the remarkable life of Dr. Jon Anthony ("Tony") Smith will be held on Sunday, May 12, 2013, from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m., at Holman Ranch in Carmel Valley.

Tony died peacefully at his home in Carmel on March 12, 2013. He was born in 1939 in the family home were his father was also born, on their farm and ranch in Kansas. He grew up in another age -- in a small, close-knit town. Always bright and eager to learn, Tony studied ahead to graduate from high school in only three years. There were five students in his graduating class. He went on to the University of Kansas, where he earned his doctorate of medicine, graduating with highest honors in surgery and medicine. He completed his medical internship and residency at Los Angeles County General Hospital. Shortly after, he served as a helicopter combat surgeon in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Heroism, among other medals. Tony then moved with his family to the Monterey Peninsula, where he practiced medicine for the last 40 years. Throughout his life, he was a highly respected physician, whose expertise in internal medicine and gastroenterology made him the caregiver to thousands of patients, who also became his friends.

A renaissance man, Tony loved sailing, horseback riding, traveling, hiking with his dogs, and tending his vineyard in Carmel Valley. He also remained close to his roots, regularly visiting the family home in Kansas.

A memorial service will be followed by a celebratory remembrance among family, friends, patients, and colleagues. Please join us to honor Tony's life incredible life.
