Anne Marie Brown

Anne Marie Brown passed away peacefully at her home Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, after a lengthy illness. Her loving family surrounded her. Anne was born July 14, 1935 in Worcester, MA, to James and Isabella Callahan.

Anne received her undergraduate in Home Economics at Keen State University in Massachusetts. She received her Masters in Education at Boston University. After college, Anne traveled overseas to teach in Germany at the military base. It was there she met the love of her life, Jack, at a carnival. Jack was stationed in Germany by the United States Army. Jack and Anne were married and returned to Fort Ord. Anne taught at Washington Junior High School, and eventually went on to North Salinas High School and taught special education for 25 years. After retirement, Anne was elected to the Salinas High School Board, where she remained for eight years. Anne continued her leadership as a two-year member of the Sacred Heart School Board. Aside from being an avid educator, Anne was also a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) teacher for 18 years. Anne leaves a legacy in education and leadership. She strived for her students to reach their full potential, and touched the hearts of many young individuals. Anne enjoyed her summers exploring in Yosemite with her family as well as countless roundtrips up and down the coast of California visiting missions. However, no matter where she was or what she was doing, her teacher's hat was always on.

Anne was a proud member of the California Teachers Association (CTA), Catholic Daughters Association, American Association of University of Women (AAUW), and American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

Her husband, Jack Brown who passed Jan. 19, 1988, preceded Anne in death. Her brother, Charles Francis Callahan, also precedes Anne in death.

Anne is survived by her children, Johanna Brown of Salinas, Kathleen (Jim) Gillott of Chualar Canyon, Sharon Brown of Los Gatos, Tricia Brown of Hollister, Jennifer (Rich) Haro of Salinas, and Timothy Brown of Salinas; and grandchildren, Beau, Jack, Adam, Claire, and Brooke Gillott, Catelyn, Evan, Nathan, and Thomas Haro, Elizabeth, Caroline, Joseph, and Anne Fleming.

Anne blessed many lives and will be missed dearly.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., at Sacred Heart Church, 22 Stone St., Salinas, CA 93901.

Anne was first class and my champion from the first day she interviewed me for my position with the SUHSD in the summer of 1980. I am blessed to have known her as an educator and a friend. Her love for education never faded. May her family and we all find peace in letting her go from our grasp. We know you will wait for us!

(Senator) Anne Brown touched thousands of lives in so many ways. Her warm, gentle, sometimes humorous and thoughtful approach towards students and colleagues was truly unique.
She was a leader in the best sense by empowering those around her and by making anyone she talked to feel special. She led with courage as a teacher, and after retirement, with her service on the school board. Hundreds of us love and will truly miss her.

Who didn't love Anne Brown? She was a huge supporter of Everett Alvarez High School and Mission Trails ROP. I always saw Anne at our events. She loved the students and was accessible to the staff. She listened to you and valued what you had to say. She was a true educator. Anne, there is a special place for you in Heaven. Thank you for being a blessing to those who knew you. God bless you and your family.

I had the great interacting with Anne on educational issues here, and her presence at the NSHS Top 100 dinner was always vital to our Rotary Club - even after she stepped down from the board. She always had that Irish twinkle in her eye. She will be missed.

Mrs. Brown, Anne was one of those great ladies I have ever known. During my time at La Paz Middle School she was always at events, while her spirit and encouragment of the students, staff was felt by all. While attending school board meetings for La Paz she would always publicly comment on the success and progress the school and students were making. The students of Salinas, the staff of Salinas Union High School District as well as the community were so very lucky to have her as their advocate.
