Ted R. Keir, 92, of Athens, Pa., passed away at his home on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, with his family by his side. He was born on Oct. 23, 1924 in Sheshequin Township, where his grandparents settled after coming over from Scotland. His parents were George R. and Libbie (Morley) Keir. He was the loving husband of Evelyn (Groff) Keir. The couple married on June 8, 1952 and celebrated 64 happy years together. 
Ted attended a two-room schoolhouse in Sheshequin until sixth grade and then went on to Ulster High School where he graduated in 1942.
He joined the army in World War II and served in the Medical Corps as Staff Sergeant in the Pacific Theatre.
He graduated from E. Stroudsburg College in 1950 and returned to Ulster where he worked as a teacher, coach, and administrator.
He later began teaching Earth and space science, conservation, environmental science, and vocational science at Athens High School, and sponsored an astronomy club and a rock and mineral club. 
He coached baseball and basketball at Athens for a number of years, winning several league and district championships.
He earned a master's degree in health and physical education from Ithaca College and a master's equivalency in the Earth and space science field, through the National Science Foundation. He taught several off campus graduate classes for Penn State.
Mr. Keir retired in 1984 after 33 years of teaching. He had written an outdoor column, "Sportsman's Sphere" for the Sayre Evening Times for 26 years. He served an eight-year term as a commissioner on the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. He was an avocational archaeologist for over 50 years, writing and lecturing about Native Americans and working on a number of PA excavations, along with being a co-founder of the Susquehanna River Archaeological Center (SRAC) and the Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club.
Mr. Keir has been the recipient of many honorary life memberships, and was inducted into the Athens High School Sports Hall of Fame. He was a lifetime member of the Athens United Methodist Church.
Ted was predeceased by his siblings, Beatrice Dowd, Bessie Ward, Mary Harris, Esther Stewart, George Keir, Delbert Keir, and Walter Keir.
Ted is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his sons, Ron (Donna Tracy) Keir, William (Susan) Keir, Gerald (Dina Mosier) Keir, and Charles (Michelle) Keir; his daughter, Debra (Kevin) Raupers; his grandchildren, Julie (Ron) Hadlock, Brandy (Gareth) Volz, Jennifer (Jamey) Kelsall, William Keir, Matthew Keir, Dylan Keir, Katelyn (Paul) Homnick, Isaac (Anna) Keir, Keiran (Nick) Soprano, Amy Keir, Christopher Raupers, and Jordan Raupers;12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins. 
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at the Athens United Methodist Church, 118 S. Main St., Athens, Pa., with the Rev. Helen Learn officiating.
