William Mahoney Obituary

Mahoney, William J. II, 90, of Niantic, formerly of Wethersfield, devoted husband of the late Mary (Steinmiller) Mahoney, entered into the Lord's embrace with his family by his side, Wednesday May 5, 2010.

Born in Hartford, March 4, 1920, he was the son of the late William and Ellen (Burke) Mahoney.

Bill was a graduate of Bulkeley High School, Class of 1938, after which became the owner/operator of Mahoney's Texaco Station on the Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield, retiring to Giants Neck Beach, Niantic, after many years of providing service to the community.

William enjoyed boating at the shore in Niantic, and found joy building model airplanes, and boats. An avid reader he could relax with a good book and one of his "stogies". Most of all he enjoyed the company and time spent with his family.

William will be fondly remembered by his loving children and their spouses; Mary Sapere and her husband Emil of Glastonbury, William J. Mahoney III and his wife Linda of Delaware, Michael Mahoney and his wife, Pamela of West Hartford, Peter Mahoney and his wife Patricia of East Hampton, and Timothy Mahoney and his partner, Lee-Ann Berger of Cromwell; his grandchildren, Kristina Kearney and her husband Michael, Emil Sapere III and his wife Tracy, Katie Mahoney O'Donoghue and her husband James, William Joseph Mahoney IV and his wife Tina, Erin Mahoney, Colleen Mahoney, Meghan Mahoney, Michael Mahoney, Sean Mahoney and Kayla Mahoney; as well as his eleven great-grand children, Brianna Kearney, Colby, Chase and Ava Sapere, Hunter Kremen, Jake, Rowan and Daly O'Donoghue, William Mahoney V, Ryan Mahoney and Matthew Mahoney. Bill is further survived by his brother and sister-in-law, John & Janet Burke and his sister, Catherine Montgomery of Florida.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Maryann Fabrich, Bill's most special caregiver.

William's family will receive relatives and friends at the Farley Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd, Wethersfield, Monday May 10, 2010 from 9:30-11:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating William's life at 12:00 noon in Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield.

Interment will follow at Mount. St. Benedict Cemetery, (Section W), 1 Cottage Grove Rd, Bloomfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in William's name to the Ruby Slipper Cancer Foundation for Children, 2842 Main St., Suite 235, Glastonbury, CT 06033. Ruby Slipper is a non profit organization that was started in honor of William's great granddaughter, Brianna, a cancer survivor and supports the cancer programs at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. I so enjoyed Mr. Mahoney as a teenager when I ran the (committee boat) Lightning sailboat races at GNB in Niantic. He brought such delight and fun to the races with his quick wit and banter. I am certain that this joy continued at the post race cocktail parties. Our love to the family and friends of (Mr.) Mahoney.

I have known Mr. Mohoney all of my life. He was a good man that loved his family and friends and cared so much about the community of Wethersfield and Niantic where he lived. He was a fighter. I will miss sitting next to him at Thanksgiving dinner and passing his favorite, apple pie and ice cream. Rest in peace Bill.
