Musya Zilberman Obituary

New London - Musya Sorkin Zilberman, 62, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, after a courageous battle with a rare neurological disease.

Musya was born on July 29, 1949, in Kiev, Ukraine, where she met and married Alexander Zilberman. They immigrated to the United States with their two young children in 1979 and quickly became involved in the Jewish community in New London.

Musya touched the lives of many people through her active involvement in the Russian resettlement program with the Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut. From volunteering at soup kitchens, providing translation for Russian families and volunteering at events, Musya immersed herself in the community.

She had many hobbies including needlepoint, making jewelry, bible study, and reading. Most of all, she enjoyed cooking and baking and spending time with family and friends.

Musya will be forever remembered by her husband, Alexander; beloved children, Anna and Slavik; treasured grandchildren, Kitana and Nyssa; sister, Luba; niece, Bella; nephew, Michael; cousin, Alexander; and the countless extended family, close friends, and entire Russian and Jewish community who have touched her life.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Sept. 7, 2011, at Congregation Beth El in New London with a reception also at the synagogue from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The family will receive visitors at their home, 129 Clark Lane, Waterford, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. with Shiva prayers at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and Thursday, Sept. 8.

Donations on her behalf may be made to the Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut, 28 Channing St., New London CT 06320 or to Congregation Beth El, 660 Ocean Ave., New London CT 06320.
