Betty Mortensen Obituary

Ledyard - Betty Mortensen, 83, of Gales Ferry, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013, at her residence.

She was born on May 8, 1929, the daughter of Charles E. and Beatrice (Buchner) Reid.

Betty was married to Ralph W. Mortensen Jr. on May 20, 1950, in New York. Ralph passed away Nov. 1, 2001.

Betty was very active in the community, spent time on the board of Gales Ferry Community Center, Republican Town Committee, and she worked the polls on election day. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Ledyard. An avid bridge player, she loved her weekly games with the "dirty eight" and playing in tournaments.

Betty is survived by a son, R. William Mortensen of Pawcatuck; two daughters, Nancy Frantz of Nazareth, Pa., and Katherine Mortensen of Gales Ferry; two brothers, Charles and Donald Reid; and two sisters, Bonnie McManamy and Nancy Denner. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Fred Finn of San Francisco, Calif., Suzanne Finn Stevenson of Erie, Pa., Anna and Sarah Bliven of New London, and Ellen Mortensen of Pawtucket, R.I.; and her eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her sons, Mark and Richard; her brother, Richard; and her sister, Joan.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. David's Episcopal Church, Route 12, Gales Ferry. Interment will be in Gales Ferry Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.

Donations in her memory may be directed to the Center for Hospice Care Southeast Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360, the Salvation Army, 11 Governor Winthrop Blvd., New London, CT 06320, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Nancy, Bill and Katherine,

I am on a cruise and just got word of Betty's passing. i am so sorry that I cannot be there tonight or tomorrow. Your mother was always very kind to me and I always enjoyed her vivacity and sense of humor. She fought a good fight and endured much but now can rest. My condolences to you and yours
