Michael Wallace Obituary

Ledyard - Michael John Wallace, 60, passed away at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, on Feb. 8, 2013.

He was born March 1, 1952, to his loving parents, John Madden Wallace and Joan (Ashcraft) Wallace in a snowstorm. His early years were spent in Quaker Hill, then moving to Spain where he and his family traveled throughout the Mediterranean region of Europe. He lived in New London and then Mason's Island, Mystic, where he gained a love of Long Island Sound. He spent many happy days sailing on his beloved sailboat, Erendil. In later years, he enjoyed time spent lobstering. He also loved sports, football, and basketball.

Mike attended St. John's Junior High and then St. Bernard High School, where he met many of his lifelong friends. He graduated from Boston College.

He worked most of his life for Yankee Remodelers in New London as a carpenter, later at P&H Construction, and at various business tasks, among them as a real estate agent.

He will be greatly missed by his mother, Joan Ashcraft Wallace of Ledyard and his two sisters, Barbara Lynn O'Neill of Andover and Kathleen Wallace Stearns and her husband, Arthur B. Stearns, of Mansfield. He was a pillar of wisdom to his two nephews, Wallace B. Stearns and Shepherd Michael Stearns and his three nieces, Eliza Stearns, Colleen and Caiti O'Neill.

Michael was predeceased by his father, John M. Wallace.

He built his post and beam home in the woods of Ledyard and spent many an hour watching wildlife accompanied by his loyal dogs, Charles, Benie, and Cody.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal shelter or the charity of your choice.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on today, Feb. 12, with a service at 2 p.m. at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. Interment will be private.

I´ve thought of Michael often back in 1982 I working for Sherwin-Williams Mike working with Yankee Remolders we would play twice a week fours at at time in Cactus Jack´s basketball open rec leagues Tuesdays in Norwich HS and Thursdays in Waterford 2 hours fast pace with the younger guys and two hours slow break with the older guys ( we were the only two that they allowed us to play) Mike was a very good player always strong around the basket rebounding and filling the lane ! I´ve transfer to Florida that spring Mike attended my wedding in May in RI and unfortunately that´s the last time I saw him. Lots of great memories back then the NBA was playing two games on TNT we´d alway manage to catch the 2nd game sharing a pitcher or two of brew a full pizza for each us ! Home by midnite open the store at 7 ! Oh to be young again ! So I just realize if Mike´s passing so sad to realize I´ve lost a great playing partner ! God Bless you Mike may you Rest in Peace ! I just learned of Mike's passing through a mutual friend, Doug Shaffer. I enjoyed hanging out with ' Wally ' from the mid 70s to early 80s. I particularly remember the year he hung out with me in my home town of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. I don't think I've ever encountered a gentler soul in my life. My only regret was falling out of touch with Mike.

My condolences to the Wallace family. I lived around the corner from your house on Vauxhall Street in New London. My family lived on Ledyard Street. I went to St. Bernard Boys' High School with Mike. We spent many afternoons in your house and playing basketball at Bartlett and St. Bernard's. In fact Mike and I were members of the infamous St. Bernard "Bombers!" Mike went to BC and I to UCONN, and we lost touch as I moved away from Southeastern CT. I now live in Mystic and cringed when I read of his death in The Day this evening. I'm so sorry to hear this news. I remember Mike as a great guy, and a great friend. I have fond memories of our days shooting hoops and driving aimlessly around Southeastern CT i search of yet another game. My Mike rest in peace. It was a true pleasure to know him.
