Warren Lewis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2010.
Mystic - Warren P. Lewis, a lifelong resident of West Mystic, died Sept. 30, 2010, following a brief illness.

Warren was born Sept. 13, 1943, educated in local schools, and graduated from Fitch High School and Mitchell College. He enjoyed working summers gardening at the Mystic Seaport and boating nearby. Warren proudly served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Following his military service, he returned to West Mystic, and after holding some local administrative positions, he went to work at Electric Boat. At the time of his death Warren had been employed at Electric Boat for 40 years and had made many friends among his co-workers who enjoyed his quiet good humor and willingness to help wherever he could.

Warren enjoyed the outdoors and particularly long walks along the shoreline. He was well known for a love and kindness to animals and his weekly hobby of flea market trading. He was a gentle man with playful, boyish delight and a knack for shooting elastics, making paper airplanes, and flipping coins with his friends. He repaired everyone's broken eyewear and replaced batteries or wristbands for broken watches. He remembered his friends with theme gifts such as key chains, pens, state quarters, and tiny flashlights. Warren knew considerable rock 'n roll history and lore. His favorite group was The Doors. Most of all, Warren treated everyone, from janitor to manager, child to grandparent, with equal respect and kindness.

Warren was predeceased by his parents, Roger and Isabelle (Pont) Lewis and a brother, Richard Hewitt.

He is survived by his companion, Carolyn Lally of Waterford; his maternal aunt, Irene Stenhouse; a niece and two nephews including Kip Hewitt; several cousins; and many friends.

There will be a graveside service and burial at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at the northwest area of Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield MA 01104-2396 or the Connecticut Humane Society, 169 Old Colchester Road, Quaker Hill CT 06375.

Warren was a good friend to many people, he was truly a unique and interesting man that will be missed by all that knew him. I came to know Warren at the end of 2001 when I started at EB.

I have many good memories of my "flipping" buddy:
The walks that we went on at lunch around New London when we worked at Shaws Cove.
Warren's quiet sense of humor and how he always made you feel like you were the most important person in the world.
How good he was at his job and how helpful he was to everyone.
His historical knowledge of EB and the surrounding area.

My sincerest condolences go out to Carolyn and Warrens family. A great man has left us, but maybe if we were all a little more "like Warren", the world would be a better place.

I have worked for over 40 years with Warren at EB. He always had a smile and a happy go lucky disposition. He was the keeper of Tech Pubs archives. If you ever needed to reminisce, he knew all the answers about our department. He kept my fan running for years and provided us a source for all the state and presidential quarters. He maintained my numerous watches with humor. He loved sweets and would sometimes surprise me with a candy bar we knew from childhood. His loss was a shock none of us was prepared for. He was a kind and gentle soul I will miss for the rest of my life.
Rest in peace Warren, you've done well.

Warren was a kind and gentle man who always had a smile and friendly greeting for everyone. He was the "keeper of the keys" and we all knew that we would eventually get our supplies....after a short interrogation. He was a pleasure to know and work with and I will miss him.

To the Lewis Family and Carolyn,
Warren was such a great guy! Yes, I am also one of his “Watch Battery” folks that he took care of. Warren was always cheerful and fun to be around. He will be so missed at Electric Boat. May God be with you all at this time of sorrow, and help you get through this.

One day, maybe there will be a small newspaper article, tucked away on page 7, reporting that the Acela Express from NY to Boston was stopped by a mysterious something on the tracks near Mystic. The article might go on to state that nothing was found to cause the obstruction, yet the train was held up for quite a while, and the engineer and several other witnesses were sure there was something there. And I’ll think, “All Right, Warren!!!”

Special sympathy goes out to both Carolyn and Warren’s family. Warren was a very special friend that I have known for 20 plus years. He was always happy to see me (see anyone for that matter). I have many fond memories of Warren. He always called me "Uncle Lewie" because we shared the name "Lewis". I can't tell you how many watch battery replacements he did for me or how many glasses he repaired for me. He would always give me a hard time when I asked him for supplies and then he would let me window shop through his cabinets. I am sure he is up in heaven now, keeping the LORD fully supplied. I will certainly miss him and his humor. You WERE very special Warren and you WILL be missed by all.

Dear Carolyn and the entire Lewis Family,

I’m an ol’ friend of Warren’s from EB for over 30 years. Understanding the hole left behind, regardless the inevitability or forewarning, pray this helps some wee bit...to allow... enable…the grief! Such a complete shock to hear about our good friend. He’s now at peace with our Lord…but definitely keepin’ y’all in our prayers, that Christ bring you to the peace and strength y’all need to cope with this trial!

When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss…inconsolable…she was my mentor! I like to think that I got my character from my father, but my mind and its capacity from m’dear sainted mother!!! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity with my God dearly close...a cherished, hard-won prize...but, in the interim, that answer lies below.

SELFISH TEARS
(I Eulogize My Beloved Mother - March, 1989)

Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!

We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!

So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!

Dear Carolyn and Family and Friends of Warren,
I am deeply saddened at Warren's passing. He was an extraordinary person, in a quiet and gentle way. He will be missed by all who knew him. I am sorry to have to miss his service; I would most certainly be there if I were going to be in town, but family obligations preclude my attending. Please accept my deep sympathies.

Warren was a very special friend that I have known for 35 plus years and have many fond memeories. I can't tell you how many watch batteries he replaced or how many watches he sold me. He always knew when I needed a new watch. Friday mornings were special with the scratch off lottery tickets that we shared, never got rich but had fun trying. I will surely miss Warren. I am sure he is up in Heaven with many of our friends from Tech Pubs. God Bless you Warren.

Carolyn: I can't even begin to name all the great 'Warren moments' I experienced while at Electric Boat. He was a friend to all, and a warm man. His passing leaves a giant hole in the fabric of mankind.

IN MEMORIUM

In countless gentle, kindly ways he lived a sermon all his days. Believing in the folk he knew and making friends his lifetime through
Enjoying life, its works and fun, he sought the best in everyone. Living his faith from day to day, he sowed good seed along the way.
Now death has set his spirit free in fields of immortality, to claim a task of greater worth than any he had known on earth.

MISS ME_BUT LET ME GO

When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take. And each must go alone. It's all a part of the Master's plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know, and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me, but let me go.
