Daniel Killeen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2011.
New London - Daniel Vernon Killeen gave up the ghost at 9:20 a.m. on the beautiful Saturday morning of Oct. 8, 2011. During his last days, Dan was visited by numerous relatives, distant and close, and friends, near and dear. Dan was also comforted by artists and musicians, many of whom he supported over the years through patronage or with employment at The Wine Merchant, the shop he owned and ran for over 25 years. The droves of eclectic visitors sparked such curiosity, one member of the hospital staff asked, "Who is in there, Paul McCartney?"

Dan was one of seven children born to Jeannette Home and John Holmes Killeen of Montville, and he spent his childhood feeding the chickens, slopping the hogs, milking the cow, and walking many miles through severe weather to and from school (uphill both ways). Dan became an unapologetic Red Sox fan from his first game at Fenway with his father in 1946, when he saw his idol, Ted Williams, play. He attended his last game with his sons in August 2011. And, as an armchair general manager, Dan felt he played a key role in ending the Curse of the Bambino.

Dan was a proud Bulkeley Boy where he played basketball. Following a promising run in 1950, Dan was dismayed to discover he would miss the 1951 season. Having joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve at age 16, under circumstances never fully explained to family, he was called for active duty in 1950. The ‘51 Tigers won the State and New England Championships. Later, when asked what he'd been thinking about while headed to Korea, his only response was, "Well, I was going to miss the basketball season." At its 50 year reunion, members of the undefeated ‘51 team asked Dan to join them for the commemorative photo that ran in The Day. Dan referred to this as one of the greatest honors of his life.

After an honorable discharge for his service in the Korean War, Dan returned home for college and continued his standout basketball, playing at Mitchell where he was said to be the spark-plug of the team. He moved on to the University of Arizona in Tucson where he made many lifelong friends and received a bachelor of arts degree while working as the director of a church rectory.

Upon graduation, Dan grew his hair long, traded his creased slacks for bell bottoms, and tuned into the American counter culture of the 1960s. Dan traveled from Haight-Ashbury to New York where he worked the ‘64 World's Fair and even attended Woodstock. He enjoyed recounting the fundamental peace of the festival, despite the "poor organization." He was quick to point out, "The whole thing was blown out of proportion. It was filthy, and I left after two days!"

Dan's career as a personal property appraiser afforded him the opportunity to roam around the country enjoying the work and making friends. After more than 25 years at Cole Layer Trumble, Dan co-founded G&K Associates and later worked as an independent consultant. He was working for the towns of Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Salem at the time of his death. He was known for upsetting more than a few taxpayers with his remarkable abilities as an assossor.

Dan enjoyed spending his later years in the company of his children, David Wharmby and daughter-in-law, Belinda Basile, of Stamford, Greg Wharmby of Fairfield, Lee Killeen of Montville, Kimberly Santos and son-in-law, Frank Santos, of Ossining, N.Y.; as well as his grandchildren, Emily and Pamela Wharmby, Justin and Franklin Santos, and his newborn granddaughter, Juliana Santos, who he regretted not meeting.

Join family and friends for a Celebration of Dan's Life at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Hygienic Art Park in New London.

I first met Dan in New Orleans through mutual friends and liked him immediately. I later moved to Ct and spent alot of time with the Killeen/Wharmby family. He opened his home to me and always made me feel welcome. To David, Greg, Lee, and the rest of the Killeen family I am truely sorry for your loss. He was a true New England gentlemen and he will be missed by many.

I had known Dan since the Branford revaluation in 1980. He was the favorite of the staff and the best company after work at a local establishment. I'll miss his charm and his humor.

I first met Dan in 1980 in Agawam when we were both employed by United Appraisal. He was quite the character, with a great sense of humor. He was very knowledgeable in his field, and was a great help to new employees. My thoughts and condolences to the Killeen family.

I worked with Dan many years at CLT. He was always a gentleman and a wry wit. Also, I never let the short hair fool me. I offer my sympathies to his family on his passing.

I met Dan in 1976 while working in the Waterford Assessors Office, he was with United Appraisal. And again in 1980 when I moved to the Old Lyme Assessors Office we worked together on a Reval. The last 5 years he has worked for our office doing his thing with Personal Property. To say Dan was a character is an understatement. He sure was a lot of fun to work with although his slow Irish pace sometimes drove me nuts! I will miss him greatly.

To the Killeen Family:
My deepest sympathy in the loss of Dan. I met Dan through the Assessor's Office in Old lyme Ct and it was always a delight to see him walk through the door wearing an array of crazy hats ready to take on the "towers" of Old Lyme. He will be sorely missed.

I hadn't seen Dan in a while and the fact I won't see him again saddens me. The world is diminished without him.

I've known Dan since the early 70's when we both worked for the United Appraisal Co. Dan was always thorough and enthusiastic when it came to appraising personal property. His aggressiveness in doing his job was always appreciated by the Assessor but not so much by the property owner.
Dan had been a consultant for the Town of Old Saybrook, Assessor's Office since 1998. In his own way, Dan would convince most property owners that his assessment was the correct one.
I also worked with Dan for the Town of Salem, CT. Dan covered the office in the afternoon and was well liked by all Town Hall employees.
Over the past twelve years we went on many fishing trips on the Sea Sprite out of Old Saybrook. Dan always enjoyed the time that he spent on the boat, usually with family and friends.
those of us left behind will always miss Dan's wit and sense of humor.

Dear Killeen Family,

I have had the pleasure of working with Dan in the Old Saybrook Assessor's office since I started back in 2007. He was always fun to work with. He is missed very much, especially now that it's personal property season! I still keep thinking he's going to walk through the door at any moment. All of us in the office miss Dan tremendously. He wasn't just a co-worker he was a great friend.

Dan was one of those people when you met him you felt cheated because there wasn't enough time in the moment to truly enjoy Him.I met Dan through my daughter and his daughter and had only those special moments with him where he made me feel truly welcome to be in his presents, his conversation was always genuine and he always may you feel like you were a long time friend of his. There are very few people on this earth who can make a stranger feel like a close friend, and Dan was one of those few. Heavenly Father Thank you for Dan and please Bless his family, for Dan will truly be missed.
