Peter Byczkowski Obituary

Montville - Peter Adalbert Byczkowski Jr., of Oakdale, passed away Wednesday evening, June 9, 2010, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 10, 1937, in Glen Lyon, Pa., to Peter and Anna (Malachefski) Byczkowski.

After graduating from Plymouth (Pa.) High School in 1955, he joined the U.S. Navy. He served his country proudly and bravely for 20 years before he retired in 1975. This was one of his proudest accomplishments. After his naval retirement, he went to work at Electric Boat in Groton as a senior planner for 23 years.

He married his beloved wife, Catherine (McDonough) at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on June 14, 1958. They enjoyed a lifetime of love and laughter. She survives him.

An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a lifetime member of the NRA and the North American Fishing Club. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He and Catherine enjoyed seeing the natural beauty of the world through their camping experiences. He started camping as the assistant Brownie leader for his daughters' Girl Scout Troop and later joined the Good Sam Camping Club and the New England Winnebagos. Always wanting to help, he was a volunteer EMT and firefighter at the Oakdale Firehouse, of which he was a lifetime member. Faith and family went hand in hand for Peter, and he was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church in Montville. He faithfully served as past Grand Knight and financial secretary for the Knights of Columbus Council 25.

A family man ever day of his life, he spent countless hours watching his grandchildren at sporting events, school plays, band concerts, and scouting events. Nothing made them happier than knowing that their "Dzjdzja" was in the crowd.

Peter is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Catherine, of Oakdale; his daughters, Kathleen Joslin of Oakdale, Patricia and Steve Carlino of Oakdale, and Anja and Michael Heinzman of Bloomsdale, Mo. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Barbara Joslin of Belmont, Mass., Kristin and Scott Joslin of Oakdale, and Steven and Anna Heinzman of Bloomsdale, Mo. He is also survived by two sisters, Jean Byczkowski of Maryland and Bernadine Gardenbrock of Tennessee.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Byczkowski of Pennsylvania.

Calling hours will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today, June 11, at the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, at St. John's Church, 22 Maple Ave., Montville. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery in Montville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Peter's memory may be made to St. John's Church.

Kristin I want to say what beautiful
work all of you did on the pictures , the mass , songs and readings for your grandfather. I am sure he was looking down at all of you and would say "a job well done and I am very proud."
The love all of you had for your grandfather and your grandmother was shown with much courage during a very difficult time.
Your grandfather fought a great fight, his battle is done and now
he is at peace. His gentle touch
remains in the hearts of those who loved him best and that is his family and most of all his wonderful grandchildren.
MUCH LOVE TO ALL OF YOU.
Sincerely Monica

I served with "Ski" and last saw him on the Seawolf in 1964. He was a truly nice person and I am proud to have known him. He made a friend of a young man from California (who now lives in Maryland). We had a mutual friend with Bernard Steadman. I am happy to see that "Ski" led a full and happy life and I know that he will be missed.

To my Connecticut family, Cathy, Kristen, Patty and grandchidren: I am so overcome with grief for the loss of a man who started our friendship as a camping member of the N.E. Scotty Club and went on to become our beloved "brother". I will ALWAYS remember Peter sitting in that PA campground, knitting an afghan that Cathy had started about 20 years previously. Peter, you were GOOD! Many years have passed, many laughs and ALWAYS, ALWAYS THE CARING, LOVE AND RESPECT of a great family man. We will miss you. Your Dedham, MA family, Fran and family.

Cathy and family, though I personally did not have the opportunity to grow up next door I feel as though I did through the whole "Quay" family. With the many memories we have all shared, laughed at, and the loses that we had shared I feel as though I did grow up along with the "Quay" family, plus being married to a Peter Quay for 26 yrs. You and Pete were part of our 25th Anniversary party and am so glad that we had the time to enjoy your loving arms during that special time with us. Though we may not live next door any longer, Pete along with your whole family will as always be as thought of as one large family - Quay's and Byczkowski's the many memories that we've shared..
Our love and sympathy Brenda and Peter Quay and Family
