He was born in New London, on June 16, 1921, son of the late Walter and Clara (Holly) Wainwright. As a boy, he lived for five years in Panama, where he loved to go shrimping. Ernest had many fond memories of Panama that he loved to share. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. Ernest worked for the government at the Naval Underwater Sound Laboratory for 35 years.
In August of 1942, he was united in marriage to Margaret Gonsowski in Michigan; she predeceased him in 2011.
Mr. Wainwright was known as a man of good nature, human kindness, great generosity and brought joy to many. Ernest lived his life well, walking six miles a day. He was an avid gardener and a tremendous father and husband.
Ernest was also predeceased by a son, Timothy Wainwright in 2009; two brothers Walter Wainwright and Francis Wainwright; and a sister, Joan Alger, all of whom he loved dearly.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Wainwright of Gales Ferry and a grandson, Joseph Baracco of Sarasota, Fla.
