James Loakes Obituary

Dubbed "The Little Colonel" by Minnie Pearl Jeffrey Ford, son of the late entertainer Tennessee Ernie Ford, announced today the passing of Ford's lifelong manager, confidante, and closest friend, James "Red" Loakes, who died Saturday, September 4, 2010 after a long illness. Loakes was born October 25, 1929 in Los Angeles, Calif., the oldest son of Margaret and Adelbert Loakes. From the earliest days of his youth, he was taught the value of an uncompromising work ethic; a trait that would define him throughout his life. Enamored by vaudeville and show business from his earliest memories, Loakes began his career behind the scenes at twelve years old, as the Pony Ride Coordinator at Lucas KiddieLand in West Covina, an early precursor of Disneyland. Within weeks of enrolling as a freshman at El Monte High School, he became the school's youngest stage manager, handling backstage duties for every production and function held at the school during his four years there, from 1943 to 1947. In 1947, that same skill and reputation landed him the position of stage manager at the El Monte Legion Auditorium, where he began handling the production duties for Thursday night boxing and wrestling matches. The following year, when bandleader and radio star Cliffie Stone booked the Auditorium for his 'Hometown Jamboree' Saturday night dances, he was told to talk to Red Loakes. That meeting set the stage for one of the greatest partnerships in show business - Stone's newest act was a singer from Tennessee who would go on to become one of the world's most celebrated entertainers - he went by the stage name of Tennessee Ernie Ford. "Cliffie, Jim and Dad were inseparable for nearly half a century," Ford's son, Buck said. "Saying Jim was Dad's manager doesn't come close to the place he held in his career, his life, and our family's life. He was Dad's best friend, his most loyal friend, and that friendship bound them together beyond what any one word description could convey." It was a friendship and partnership that would take Loakes from the wings of the El Monte Auditorium to the studios of NBC and Capitol Records, to the great performance halls of the world, and to the inner circle of Presidents; a half century career that was nothing short of legendary. In the early nineties, Loakes moved to Palm Springs, where he spent the last years of his life, managing Ford's extensive music publishing catalog, and other interests, including producing the cooking classes at the Cary Grant estate for famed Chef-Without-Borders Andrew Copley, at the Four Star restaurant, Copley's On Palm Canyon. A veteran of the United States Army, Loakes is survived by his sister, Carol Ireton of La Verne, Calif.; nephews, Marty Akins and Bruce Loakes of La Verne and Grantsville, Utah; and niece, Cindy Betterly.

A close friend of Dr. Robert L. Black, Professor of Business at the University of Illinois, Dr. Black referred me to Jim who spent many hours introducing me to San Francisco, and, how to navigate the city. Jim introduced me to a number of fine people and we became the best of friends. When I travel there today, I have Jim to thank for his time, thoughtfulness, and wonderful friendship.
A very fine and exceptional individual, I'm happy and blessed that Jim is in a wonderful place.
Sincerely,
Philip Russell

Just saw a clip on Facebook from HeeHaw with Tennessee Ernie Ford and thought of you. I thought I had heard from my mom that you had passed. I remember all the fun times with you and my uncle. I have some pictures from one time when we all went fishing. You were such a good sport with us kids. Just wanted you to know that you I will always have fond memories of you from my childhood. RIP Jim.

Magnolia Water Color for Jim

I sent Jim a Christmas card this year as I always have for many years. I was somewhat surprised to have it returned, so I decided to look him up online and see if what I ultimately did discover could be true. Jim and I became good friends back when I was a back-up singer for Tennessee Ernie Ford. As my avocation at the time was oil and water color painting, he became a admirer of my work. In fact, Jim bought several of my paintings. He always loved my work. I spent many days at his house in San Francisco as a guest when I often visited that city. I could always depend on Jim. He was a very good person. He was a good friend. I am proud I knew him. I will miss him.

My condolences to Jim's family, and so many other friends who will deeply miss him. Jim was always there for us. First meeting Jim in 1956 while working Ernie's NBC daytime show, our paths crossed throughout the years. Jim never forgot his friends, and we will never forget him. One legacy that Jim and Ernie left us, was their support of "The Young Americans" by introducing them on Ernie's show in 1962. The YA's are still going strong, and are still inspiring us today, just as Jim and Ernie do. They always will.

He was a friendly face to all that passed by him. He was a good friend and warm heart. Say Hi to Ernie. Thanks for the smiles.

I was so sad to hear of Jim's passing. Had it not been for Jim Loakes and Ernie Ford, I would not be where I am today in this business. JL was my manager for several years in the 70's, and he and Mr. Ford opened more doors for me than I deserved. The world is a sadder place without "Beano" in it. You will be missed Jim....and you are loved.
