Dear Fran and Family, How shocked we were to hear of Dick's passing, although we'd been preparing ourselves for some time. Dick was "the tops," the "cream of the crop," one of the finest human beings we've ever known, certainly the definition of the word "gentleman." We loved his thoughtfulness, wisdom, and disposition of good will, and poetic nature. We have kept many of his words in print, because they are worth keeping, and treasure his insightful observations and example. How well we remember seeing the beggar in Beijing with a badly burned victim in tow. We all understood that this was a matter of exploitation, but Dick couldn't bear the sadness of it, despite this certainty, so he gave the woman money anyway. Of course he would. Fran, do you remember how he met us at the opera during intermission, and we suggested that he watch the last half with us, as there were some empty seats? He gently declined, because he didn't want to take a seat that he hadn't paid for. I will always be grateful for his help at the Alta Club when my father fell in the parking lot, and Dick ran to assist him. He couldn't know how much that meant to me. I appreciate greatly the encouragement he gave me on my novel; it's an uncertain thing, to begin writing. I know that he was a friend to many--one just had to walk down the street with him to see that. But his greatest devotion was to his family, and we value the friendship we have with each of you. We love you all and wish you comfort at this time. Much love, JoAnne and Jerry Michels, Encino, CA.

I was sad to hear of Dick's passing. I know he tried his hardest to ward off the cancer. I admired his enthusiasm in his interests, which were so many. My sympathies to Frances and the Muir family.

Dear John, Janet and family, my deepest condolensces to all of you on the passing of your father. My family has known and loved your family since 1958 when we moved into the Mt. Olympus neighborhood--particularly Janet's friendship with my sister Jeannie, and my friendship with John. Even though your family moved to California, I will always treasure the times we shared, particularly the backyard Friday night football games. I always greatly respected and admired your parents because, like mine, they created an incredible, loving atmosphere that was welcoming to the entire neighborhood as we grew up. I hope to see you all soon. God bless your large and loving family.
Your lifetime pal,
Bill Souvall
