Dr. Wallace Graham Wheeler obituary, 1918-2011

Wallace Wheeler Obituary

Dr. Wallace "Wally" "Doc" Graham Wheeler, 93, an Indio, Calif. physician for 52 years, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 8, 2011 at his home in Indio. He was born March 4, 1918 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to George and Helen Wheeler of New York. His father owned and operated a dye factory and his mother was an elementary school teacher. He grew up in Brooklyn, attended PS93 School, Boys High and graduated high school at Manlius Military School. During his school years Wally took up the drums and had his own dance band. Wally went to the University of Michigan and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1939. While at Michigan he was the lead drummer for the U of M marching and symphony band. Also at Michigan he met his future wife, Muriel. It was destined to be, because his father and Muriel's father were once roommates when they themselves were attending the University of Michigan. Upon graduation he went to work for the Babcock & Wilcox boiler making company in Ohio until World War II, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an officer. During the war he taught Marine Engineering to the future naval officers at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. After the war he pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. He attended and received his MD degree from Case Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland, Ohio in 1950. After practicing medicine in several states, in 1953 he and his family left the snow and ice and settled in Indio, working at the then Casita Hospital. He later went into private practice in Indio, retiring in 2006. He was known for putting "smiling" faces on tongue depressors and giving them to his younger patients. Wally is survived by his wife of 71 years, Muriel (Haskins) Wheeler; their daughters, Karen Hinkle of Fairfield, Idaho and Diana Thompson of Des Plaines, Ill.; son, Christopher Wheeler of Lancaster, Calif.; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, with the 14th on the way. Besides his three children, he was father to over 12 foreign exchange students. During his long and productive life, he served on the Indio City Council and was an active and lifelong member of the CV Lions Club where he wrote and directed over a dozen annual plays and musicals. A real renaissance man, he was a musician, skier, ski area owner, entrepreneur, jogger, square dancer, artist, rancher, bandleader, book author, songwriter and an avid golfer. He loved music and besides the drums, he also played the trombone, flute, clarinet, trumpet, baritone and a little piano. He especially loved "Big Band" music so he formed his own Wally "Doc" Wheeler's Band. They played at several events in the Coachella Valley including several Date Festival appearances. His orchestra also recorded and produced a "Big Band Sounds" cassette tape. He wrote a song entitled "Golf Club Throwing Blues" which was included on the tape. At age 90 he finally finished his book "How to throw a *!!?*@!!?*!&*#!! golf club!!!" and got it published. During his long golfing career, he had two holes-in-one to his credit. He loved to travel, visiting several countries with his family. He has participated in several "Blast From the Past" Michigan marching band events by playing drums on the field at "The Big House" Michigan football stadium. In 2000 Wally and Muriel took their three children to Cleveland for his "50th" medical school reunion with side trips to Canton, Ohio (Muriel's old home town) and New York City (Wally's old home town) to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. After Wally's retirement in May 2006, the City of Indio proclaimed June 22, 2006 as Dr. Wallace G. Wheeler Day. A public memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Shepherd of the Valley United Methodist Church, 45501 Deglet Noor, Indio, CA. Muriel Wheeler asks that in lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.

Doctor Wheeler was my doctor since 1957 until his retirement. "Doc" made numerous house calls to treat me when I was a child. He told about his time in the marching band at University of Michigan. In 1974, when I was recruited to U of M to play football, "Doc" joined his old bandmates for a band reunion in Ann Arbor. He made the effort to contact me (sans cell phone) so we could enjoy dinner together at one of his favorite local restaurants. He and his wife also attended my 50th birthday party. I still think of him often.

Dr Wallace always asked why I had moved back to Coachella. He said, "An educated person like yourself deserves more then working at a retirement community. You can do better". I miss you my friend and our daily chats. I miss Muriel too!

I wish to publicly thank all the people who loved and thought so much about my husband Wallace G. Wheeler (Wally). There were the nurses and helpers at Eisenhower Hospital, Manor Care, the caregivers from Alternative Caregiving Solutions, the Visiting Nurses Association as well as condolences from friends and former patients and people who took the time to sign the Desert Sun Guest book and who attended his service. I wish to also thank the Riverside County Board of Supervisors for the honor bestowed on Wally with a Memorial Resolution commemorating his services to Riverside County. There was such an outpouring of love and respect by everyone that my family and I were greatly comforted. Love to all of you and thank you.

Hi Muriel. My name is Joe. Wally use to come into the gym almost everyday after work for his daily workout. I often thought of writing a book titled, "Conversations with a Doctor". Within a 30 minute period Wally and I had managed to solve all of the world's problems. Sometimes Wally would talk about his children with great admiration and often talked about his love for you. He mentioned that you would sometimes give him a hard time about slouching. He often pushed me to continue my education. He warned me once, "If you go to medical school, pray that you do not get a fat cadaver. They sure are greasy". I use to live with my grandma and aunt. When I would get home from work my aunt Olivia would say, "So what did Wally have to say today"? When I moved away to San Diego, Wally and I wrote to each other a few times. I remember how hard it was for him to write. His arthritis really bothered him but he said that by staying active it would help ease the pain. On behalf of the Zamarripa family, our best wishes to you and your children.

I can remember cruising around in the back seat of my folks 1953 Chevrolet and playing with an old (what I thought as empty) Schick razor blade dispenser. I must have flicked the blade release lever back and forth 100 times and then suddenly a blade slide out and sliced my 5 year old thumb wide open. My Mom was so calm about it but I was freaking out as you can imagine. Blood was going all over the place. She calmly took me down to our family Dr. in downtown Indio (so funny cause in 1957, everyone in Indio was 3 blocks from downtown. LOL) and rushed me right in to Dr. Wheeler's office where he promptly looked my DEEP gash over and then methodically put a "band-aid" on it. At the ripe old age of 59 now, that scar is still quite visible and every time I look at it I think of that day and our old doctor, neighbor, and good friend, Dr. Wheeler. R.I.P. Good memories...

Dear Muriel and family and friends. I offer my sympathy to all of you. Doc Wheeler was a great asset to all of Coachella Valley through his years of service in the medical profession. Also, he touched the lives of so many people sharing his great musical talents. We have wonderful memories of all the Lions Club productions he directed which my late husband, Roger and my children and I had the opportunity to sing in. I also enjoyed doing the make-up for years in the show. Everyone loved to hear the performances of "Wally's Band" at the Date Festival and playing for dances in Palm Springs. As a member of the Methodist Church of Indio, he served on the Building Committee to help plan for the sanctuary. Doc will be missed by so many friends and family. I am so sorry I will be unable to attend the Memorial. My thoughts and prayers will be with you. God bless you. Love, Gwen Harlow, Medford, Oregon.

Dear Muriel and Family

Our deepest condolences. Dr Wheeler was our family doctor for over 40 years. He attended both of our daughters weddings, a wonderful doctor, person and friend. He will truly be missed, may his legacy carry on. We will miss him. May God guide you, and give you and your family strength and courage during these difficult times. May he rest in peace with our Lord above.

I will always remember the painting Dr. Wheeler had hanging in his office of the little basset hound puppy waiting for someone to throw the red ball that he painted. I loved it as a child and still smile when I think of it! I also loved seeing him out running laps around the baseball field at IHS (I think he was about 80 then). I always figured, if he coud keep going at that age, then my track practice was nothing! He will truly be missed by more than he and his family will ever know .

Dr. Wheeler, my doctor of over 55 years, will be missed by many. I remember his visits to our home with his black doctor's bag in my youth. I was fortunate enough to play football at his alma mater, University of Michigan. One of the highlights of my tenure there, was Doctor Wheeler's visit to one of our games and dinner after the game. It was certainly an honor and a privilege being his patient.

A fine, fine man--pretty good golfer, too
I lost more than I won. Best family doctor I ever had. Served Indio High as team doctor. An all-around good guy.

June 17, 2011

It is with sincere sadness that we mark the passing of Dr. Wheeler. He was our family physician through all the years of our lives in the desert. He helped us through our minor injuries and illnesses, and did his best to prevent any major challenges. When, however, both our Dad and daughter Star faced serious health issues, he was always kind, understanding, and did as much as he could to make things easier for all of us. Not only was he a great doctor, he was a great musician, and he touched our lives through that as well. He will be missed and forever appreciated. The Loveland Family; Resi, Erwin Jr, Liz, Joe, and Cathy (and in memory of Erwin Sr. and Star)

My thoughts and condolences go out to the entire Wheeler family. Dr. Wheeler, you were my doctor since shortly after the day I was born in 1982 and remained my doctor until the day you retired in 2006. I would drive all the way home from college just to see you when I was sick, because it was hard to trust anyone else, and you would ALWAYS find a way to fit me in. I still have not committed to another family doctor because they just aren't the same. When I first went away to school, I wanted to be a doctor just like you. I remember I was going to come and ask you to provide me with all the art work for my office because I admired your work so much. I didn't become a doctor, but you inspired me in more ways then one, and are part of the reason I am as successful as I am today. Thank you for taking such good care of me and all of my family, especially my grandparents Walt and Cathy. You will truly be missed.

Dr Wheeler was our family Dr I went to him from the time I was just a little kid until I moved out of the Desert. He was a kind and gentle man... Rest in Peace...

June 16, 2011

I was so saddened to hear of Doc's passing. I first met him when I moved to the desert in '72 and saw him for a case of tonsillitis. "Hmm...Sorrells, Sorrells - are you related to Orville Sorrells?" he said. That was my grandpa, whose life Doc saved from a heart attack in the late 50's. I was amazed he remembered the name! He remained my doctor for many, many years and he and Muriel came to my wedding in 1982. Such a zest for life Doc had - whether for his patients, his band or, most importantly, his family. He will certainly be missed, but what wonderful memories he leaves behind to those of us lucky enough to have known him.

June 15, 2011

I was Dr. Wheeler's newspaper girl and patient. Even after I moved out of the area I still drove to see him for any illness I had. I loved his "old school" Doctor's visits, the thumps on the forehead and the good ole' Awww while looking at my throat. When my Dad was younger he taught him how to play the trumbone. Dr. Wheeler was an incredible person! I am so happy he was part of my life.

Dear Muriel, Karen, Dianna and Chris,

My parents, Walter and Mary Anne White, join me in extending our sincere condolences on the passing of our friend and mentor, your husband and father. We have so enjoyed the decades of our relationship and cherish the memories of "old" Indio, "Little" Indio in Oceanside (never forget Billy Goat Hill) and all those world travels (even a broken leg in the Alps). Once in a lifetime there is a Renaissance Man born who can do it all...from all those wonderful Lion's Club productions, to the Indio Municipal Band, to City Council, to a big band leader, to being everyone's favorite physician and guiding light and so many other worthwhile endeavors. And now the pinnacle of success as the brightest guardian angel. Blessings to you all.

Wally was my doc in the 60's to '80's & my family until 2002. He'd look at you, & you couldn't lie about what was going on with you! My parents, Frank & Marge, had a trailer in 'Little Indio' in Oceanside & it was always great to see him. What a wonder legacy he leaves his family with his life.

Many memories of Dr. Wheeler over the past 50 years, of his humble, caring, and wonderful character. His up-beat personality, wry sense of humor . . . but, most all, his committment to every endeavor he pursued was a testament to this quality gentleman. His life of service blessed our family. He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten by the Standish family.

My thoughts have often been of "Wally" the past few years. After moving to the desert in 1985 I often danced to his music at various locations and looked forward to his appearances at the date festival in Indio. My condolences to Muriel and the rest of his family. He will be missed by many as an important part of this valley.
