AIKEN — Edward Alexander Speed, 91, beloved husband of Kitty Tripp Speed, passed away Monday morning, October 2, 2023 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
A native of Clayton, Ga., Ed was a son of the late Raleigh Alexander and Mary Adaline Swafford Speed. His father died when he was 6-years-old and the family moved to Seneca, S.C. He joined the Air Force when he was 16-years-old and served his country honorably.
Ed moved to Aiken County in 1952 and went to work with DuPont at the Savannah River Plant, retiring after 42 years. He was a founding member and deacon of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Windsor. He later became an active member of Millbrook Baptist Church, serving as a deacon. He was a member of Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Millbrook Whittlers.
Ed worked for many years as a poll manager for the Aiken County Board of Elections. He was a volunteer for Meals of Wheels and Christ Central. He served on mission trips all over the world.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 71 years, Kitty, include two children, Vicki Gaines (Joe), Athens, Ga., Edward A. "Eddie" Speed, Jr. (Kathy), Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren, Lindsey Nichols (Matt), Joshua Speed (fiancée Olivia Cain), Joseph Gaines, Houston Gaines, Adrianne Beacham (Matt); three great-grandchildren, Hannah Nichols, Hailey Nichols, Jackson Beacham.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his seven siblings, Lloyd Speed, Arthur Speed, Harmon Speed, Norman Speed, Lois Robinson, Brenda Smith, Deborah Williams.
The family will receive friends Thursday morning, October 5, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Millbrook Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Bill Howard III officiating.
Interment with military honors will be at 3:30 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Easley, SC with Rev. Dr. Eddie Leopard officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Millbrook Whittlers, 223 South Aiken Blvd., SE, Aiken, SC 29803.
