Herbert N. Shohet, 90, of Bethel, husband of the late Yvette Stone Shohet and Jeannette Sokolow Shohet, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Danbury Hospital following a long illness.
Born July 22, 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Rabbi David M. and Helen C. Shohet of Yonkers, N.Y.
Herb graduated from Yonkers High School. He held a Bachelors degree in Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and a Masters degree in Advanced Engineering from Yale University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a POW during the Battle of the Bulge after which he was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery when in service. Herb was employed as an aeronautical engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft, retiring in 1992 after 42 years. He held several patents for the design and development of numerous helicopter engine components.
Herb was an avid boater and was a Past Commander of the Norwalk Power Squadron. He was a past officer and trustee of Congregation Beth El in Norwalk where he was a member for over 50 years.
Herb is survived by his daughters Susan Bai (Larry) of Nevada, Barbara Greenhouse of Bethel, granddaughters Cindy Gagnon of Nevada, Ariana Penachio of Bethel, great grandchildren Adrian and Micaela Gagnon of Nevada, step-daughter Robin Bogdan of Norwalk and her children Alex, Adam, Amanda, Alyssa and many nieces and nephews.
Herb was predeceased by his brother Bob Shaw and sister Judy Gordon.
Herb will be honored with a full military service. Services will be held on Monday (TODAY), August 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM in Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT. Burial will follow in Beth El Memorial Park Cemetery, Richards Avenue, Norwalk.
