Charles Baffo Obituary

Charles Matthew Baffo

Charles Matthew Baffo, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2014 at Norwalk Hospital.
Charles “Chuck” was born on September 21, 1922 in New York City where he grew up. He graduated from Amityville High School where he was widely recognized for his athletic abilities in running and football, earning him scholarships to Hofstra University and Cornell University. However at that time, World War II was in full force and Chuck chose to postpone college and instead enlisted in the Air force. During World War II Chuck was a bomber pilot, flying 35 missions over Germany, earning him the Distinguished Flying Cross, in recognition of his heroism and extraordinary achievements.
After returning from the war, Chuck married his high school sweetheart, Joanne Goodwin, and they moved to New Haven, CT where Chuck attended Yale University. He received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Architecture. Upon completing his education, he and Joanne relocated to Wilton, CT where they lived for over 40 years, raising 4 daughters and where Chuck worked as an associate in the firm of Eliot Noyes, one of the Harvard 5 architects. Chuck's contributions to the firm included designing the Westinghouse Pavilion at the 1964 World's Fair and he was recognized by Mobil Oil, for his outstanding, innovative designs that expanded the Mobil business globally.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 68 years Joanne; Daughters: Joan of Hartford; Ruthann (Ken) Walsh of Wilton, Susan (Ray) Preston of Avon, IN and Nancy (Bill) Conron of New Canaan. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Samantha, Cally, Marykate, Casie, Duke and 7 great grandchildren.
Chuck lived a long and distinguished life, enjoying many successes, was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 111 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan, CT on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 10:00 am.
