Lewis Durland Obituary

Durland, Lewis H., IV

Age 56, died unexpectedly in his sleep on May 21, 2015 at his home in Ithaca. Left to mourn this delightful, dedicated, genial man are so many of us, especially his adoring wife, Chris Jolluck, his mother, Velma Durland, and his sister Jan Durland King (Whitney). Lew grew up in Rochester. He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a practicing LEED-certified, licensed Professional Engineer and Cert. Energy Mgr. For three decades he worked with many area companies, most recently serving as Director of Energy Management and Sustainability at Ithaca College, where he enjoyed applying his technical expertise to help conserve energy and protect our planet. Lew volunteered for a number of organizations including the Ithaca Energy Commission, Sustainable Tompkins, and Twin Tiers chapter of ASHRAE. In 2011, he was named Outstanding Volunteer for the Upstate New York Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, where he served on the Board of Directors and Advisory Panel. Lew was well-known for lending a hand when needed. He loved cycling, skiing, theatre, music, nature, his animals, children and gathering with friends and family. He loved spending time at his family cottage on Seneca Lake. Lew will be remembered for his sweet and loving nature, his mischievous and quirky sense of humor, his intellectual curiosity, his beautiful smile and blue eyes. Lew will be deeply missed by his nieces, Sarah King (Mike Zimmer), Carin Malley (Brian), nephew Benjamin Naimark Jolluck, his mother-in-law, Helen Jolluck, sisters-in-law, Barbara Chapin (Robert), Jeanne Jolluck, and Katherine Jolluck (Norman Naimark), and several aunts and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, C. Mortimer Durland. Bangs Funeral Home is assisting the family. A celebration of Lew's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 13, at the chapel at Annabel Taylor Hall, Cornell University, in Ithaca (onsite parking). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lew's name to The Finger Lakes Land Trust, 202 East Court St., Ithaca, NY 14850, or The Rocky Mountain Institute, 1820 Folsom St., Boulder, CO 80302.

Lew and I started at Sear Brown together. He was in the Horseheads office just before me; my first day was March 18,1985. I quickly understood Lew...his passion for saving energy, the outdoors, and just loving life. Time travel to Spring 2015. We reunited and immediately gravitate towards each other at at Sustainability conference at Brockport. We laughed and exchanged our pleasure leaving consulting and ending up in Facilities at different colleges. Lew was a special person,I am blessed he was in my life and especially blessed to see him recently.
My prayers are with his family.
Respectfully,
Cathy Ahern

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Lew's passing. I was a childhood friend of his and spent many days riding bikes, at camp, skiing, etc. (and teasing Jan!) with Lew. While we lost touch over the years, I have always remembered his humor, his always positive outlook and his friendship. My prayers are with him and his family.

My thoughts go out to Lew's wife and family. I had the pleasure of working with Lew for a short time, at Ithaca College. His passion will live on and his love of chocolate will not be forgotten.

To the family of Lew, I would like to once again convey our deepest condolences on behalf of the entire Ithaca College family, more specifically the Division of Finance and Administration. To say that we are still in a state of shock is an understatement. I knew Lew for a little more than a year, and worked closely with him during that time. It was a joy to hear his ideas, and his expressions of love for all things sustainable, and his strategies for getting the message out about it. He had a gleam in eyes whenever he spoke about engaging with students about sustainability and taking care of our planet. I am going to miss his energy and insights on how to make our world "greener", and to leave a lasting legacy for the generations who are yet to be born. Rest well my friend. You are indeed going to be missed by us all.

Chris, I am so sorry to hear this. Lew has always been a wonderful support to me as a professional and a terrific friend. I have often commented on how genuine of a person he was. No matter how much time passed between our meetings, he was always willing to give me direction and assist my professional endeavors in anyway that he could. I will miss him greatly.

Saddened and shocked to hear the news of Lew's passing. Lew was a great man with a real passion for the Earth. The local ASHRAE meetings will not be the same without his lively energy, positive demeanor, and abundant knowledge.

He will be sorely missed.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

I am so sorry. I have known Lew professionally for ~25 years. Living further up, off Elm St., we often chatted (in the middle of the road) on all sorts of things. We will miss him.

If you need anything, please call.

Dear Chris, I am so sorry to hear of Lew's passing. I first met Lew when I was a new architect in town around 1990, and had the opportunity to work with him over the years. Most recently as part of the County's Energy Road Map steering committee (where we last spoke just a few weeks ago). And we were west hill neighbor's for a number of years when I lived a little further up Elm Street. Lew and your golden retriever were regular walkers up the hill and occasionally we had a visit during those walks. What a great loss and sadness. May his memory be a blessing.

I've only known Lew since August 2014 when I became a colleague at Ithaca College within the Finanace and Adminstration Division. Lew was enthusiastic, optimistic, intelligent, and dedicated. He was a great teammate and very good man! Having just spent the whole day before his passing with each other and our colleagues at our divisional retreat I'm still grappling with his death. May god bless and comfort his family! Miss you Lew!

I was a former fellow employee at Ithaca College in the Facilities Dept. until last October. I remember Lew as a kind, sweet and gentle person who was very knowledgeable in his field of sustainability. He always had time for a smile and a chat about racing at Watkins Glen. He will certainly be missed.

My condolences to his wife and family.
