Carmita Dickerson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 21, 2015.
Dickerson, Carmita

On 2/17/15 while in the loving care of her grandson TJ, Carmita (Carm) Dickerson died peacefully in her sleep. Reunited with her parents, Marilind & Clifford Dickerson as well as her brother, Arthur, she begins a new journey filled with Gods' love. She was born in Lansing, N.Y. on 4/8/1930. She lived, worked, and raised her children in Ithaca for the first half of her life. In 1970's she stood against sexual harassment in the workplace. She was also responsible for the movement which makes this a form of discrimination which is now illegal. The second half of her life was spent in Southern California. She adored living in the sunshine; near the ocean. She lived, worked and retired there surrounded by family and her cat, Precious. She was active in community affairs and enjoyed acting in local theater groups. Singing, painting, listening to music and writing poetry were her passions. Her siblings, Howard Dickerson, Cliff Dickerson, Linda J Dickerson (West); children, Angela Wilcox, Richard Sweet, Dixie Roberts, Jay Auble, and Joe Wood, 12 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and more than 50 nieces & nephews survive her. She will be deeply missed by all. There will be a private family celebration of her life. Donations in her honor may be sent to local SPCA's or Hospice.

Dixie, T.J. and Joey,
I found this beautiful photo of your Mom on eyearbook.com Ithaca High School, class of 1947. Carm was a good friend. It seems like yesterday when I worked for the newspaper in San Luis Obispo, and T.J. had his paper route. One time, I rode my bicycle from the hometown of Sayre, Pa. to Robert Treeman Park in Ithaca, NY. It took me all day.

Im doing a research paper on sexual harassment and the Me Too movement and it seems she deserves so much more credit than she deserves for her contributions to the cause. She deserved more recognition in every way. Thank you Carmita. Thank you for everything.

Carmita was a special woman with syle and flair and courage. It was one of the great pleasures of my life to work with her on the issue of sexual harassment of women at work. Heaven will be a better place. Lin Farley

I am so sorry to read of Carmita's passing. She was a wonderful person. I'll never forget when she lived next to me on Cascadilla Street where I baby sat for Angie.
