I wanted to let Elaine's family know that I was inspired and encouraged to become a teacher, thanks to Elaine. She was a wonderful mentor and an even better friend. She trusted her instincts and was completely honest about what teaching was all about. I respected and admired her immensely. Any student who had the honor of being in Elaine's class will remember her forever. She had a rare personality and wit that we all will miss. Best wishes to her family. Melanie Murphy

Mrs. Houck was one of several teachers who really influenced my desire to learn and for whom English was joyful as a class and something I looked forward to. I am deeply saddened by the loss of such a light in the world. Rest in peace.

Bob and I had the honor of working with Elaine, first at DeWitt Middle School and later at Ithaca High School. She was dedicated to her students and worked so hard to see that each child worked to their fullest potential. She was a beautiful lady and will be missed.

It is with a heavy heart that I send this post. I credit Mrs. Houck's passion for teaching with my respect for the English language and writing. I still have papers that I wrote in her class! I now show them to my own children as I try to instill the need to be great, methodical writers - an invaluable skill in any profession. If this message finds my dear friend Rob Houck please know I am thinking of you from afar and sending much aloha to your family.

I am so sad and sorry to hear of Ms. Houck's passing - I had her for English and we could not have asked for a more passionate, kind, and often times, very funny teacher! I can never think of The Canterbury Tales without being reminded of her. Much love to you all.

As a graduate student in Jim and Martin's rocket group, I was a guest at Elaine and Jim's home many times - they hosted students and other faculty on numerous occasions, and we all appreciated Elaine's welcome, her wit, and her wonderful dinners/BBQs etc. We were students when Chris and Rob were born, and watched them mature into fine young men. Elaine was always gracious, and I was pleased we could stay in touch these past 40+ years. She will be sorely missed. - Judy Pipher

I will always remember Mrs. Houck. She gave me an appreciation for Shakespeare. I remember her passion for reading and understanding it. I didn't like it at first, but she made it real to me. She put it out there in a way that made you connect to the plot. I will always be grateful for that.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time.
