Byron Unsworth Obituary

Unsworth, Byron "Barney"

Longtime Ithaca High School teacher, Byron "Barney" Unsworth, died peacefully at the Ithaca Hospicare residence on Friday, March 28, 2014. Barney was born in Vineland, NJ in 1922. After serving in the Army Air Force, he graduated from Rutgers University in 1948. In 1960 Barney earned a Master of Art degree at Wesleyan University and came to Ithaca to teach world history and geography at the new high school. Barney loved teaching and enjoyed working with his associates at IHS. Barney helped to start the Cascadilla Boat Club and coached the high school rowers. He was an enthusiastic baritone in the Community Chorus, a member of the Friends of the Library and an active member of the Town of Ithaca Conservation Board and the Tompkins County Environmental Management Council, helping to plan the Waterfront Trail. He served briefly as program associate at First Baptist Church. The family thanks the staff at Hospicare and Dr. John Costello for the loving care Barney received these last few months. Barney is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peg" and two sons, Bruce (Calla) of Oakland, CA and Alan of Rochester, NY; a daughter, Laura (Ted) of Oakton, VA; and a brother, Richard (Joy) of Easthampton, MA. He is also survived by four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The family will gather this summer to celebrate Barney's life.

My sincere condolences to my friend Bruce, and the family. I was a neighbor in Renwick Heights in the 60s. May you all know God's blessings, peace and comfort in this time. Both my parents passed, a few years ago, also at Hospicare in Ithaca.
