Evelyn Blackmon Obituary

Evelyn Blackmon

Evelyn Blackmon was born in Standard, LA on November 2, 1924 and passed away on May 21, 2014. She was one of two daughters born to Robert Samuel and Emma Horne Kinnison.

The phrase "The First Woman" seemed to attach itself to Evelyn at every opportunity: 1st woman graduate from NLU, College of Business Administration in Industrial Management 1967; 1st woman in LA to earn the prestigious Certified Commercial Investment Member Realtor designation1974; appointed by Lt. Governor Jimmy Fitzmorris, 1st woman to serve on the LA Board of Commerce and Industry 1976; 1st woman President in the 60 year history of LA Realtors Association 1978; 1st woman elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives from Ouachita Parish District 15 in 1984. Some other honors include: NLU Golden Arrow Award 1988, Quota Woman of the Year 1995, and West Monroe/West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce AO Evans Award 1996. As a Realtor of over 50 years, Evelyn Blackmon took pride in helping families realize "The American Dream of Home Ownership". As a commercial Realtor, in 1970, Evelyn helped secure the property which is the current site of the West Monroe Post Office. She was also instrumental in the acquisition of the Glenwood Mall to be innovatively used as a Medical Mall. While serving in the Legislature, Mrs. Blackmon helped secure the I-20 Camp Road Interchange.

Evelyn, her husband Ed and their 2 children traveled throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. A family tradition of week long summer vacations in Perdido Key, FL created many special memories. In later years, Evelyn & Ed enjoyed many sunrises and sunsets at their Caney Lake home with their neighbors & good friends Johnny & Lynn Jacobs. Some of their happiest times were when Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren visited at the lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Dr. Edward S. Blackmon, Jr. and sister, Dorothy Kinnison of West Monroe. Survivors include: Son and Daughter-in-Law, Dr. Larry and Dency Blackmon; Daughter and Son-in-Law, Jan & Dale Mattingly; Granddaughters and families: D'Anne and Corey Bennett, Reed & Emma; Angela and Rob Hammond, Abby & Garrett; Amy and Jeremy Many, Mase, Kross & Brees, Ashley and Shannon Harper, Cam & Crew all of West Monroe and Kinbur Blackmon of Plano, TX; Nephews, Ron & June Alexander of Monroe; Don & Shirleen Alexander of Shreveport.

Her step families are Leland Wilson; Wesly and Tami Mattingly, Lara & Audrey; Wallace and Melissa Bice & Mallory; Brett and Josette Watson, Noah & Mattie Grace; Ron and Velda Purdy, Scarlett & Wyatt; Jeremy Morgan & Skyler; Lance and Brittney Kerrigan & Jace.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to her sitters, Audrey Standifer, Yllanif Williams, & Monteal Taylor for their dedication to our Mother.
