Coralie Ames Obituary

Coralie Ann

Brassfield Ames
On Thursday, February 11, 2010, the world lost a significant amount of beauty, compassion, and class. Coralie Ann Brassfield Ames left us.
She was preceded in death, by her parents Morgan, and Twila Brassfield. She was also preceded by Stephen Brassfield, and Amy Brassfield.
She is survived by her husband, Houston Ames of Tucson AZ; her son Robert Johnson III, of Seattle WA.; Houston's children Anthony Ames of Tacoma WA, and Jennifer Ames, of Utah. She is also survived by her brothers Morgan Brassfield Jr. (Kay) of Shorline WA., John Brassfield (Sue) of Newcastle CA., her sister Alice Blankenship of Puyallup WA., and cousins Lynn Brown of Olympia, and Twila Asselstine (Dave) of Hartstene Island.
Nieces and nephews include: Morgan Brassfield III , and Melissa Brassfield, John Jr., Jeffrey, and Todd Brassfield, Heather Leitch, Rebecca Little (Mike), Julie Blankenship, Mathew and Mark Brown, and William and Molly Breuer. Not to mention 3 cats; Heathcliff, Hemingway, and Holly. They will all miss her very much.
Born in Tacoma, November 2, 1940 to Morgan Emslie Brassfield, and Twila Avonne Brassfield, she grew up in East Olympia, where she would spend her childhood with her siblings, Morgan Jr., John, Alice and late edition to the household, cousin Lynn.
Coralie graduated from Olympia High School in 1958, with honors.
She graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1962, from the University of Washington, with a teaching degree, a minor in French, and a year at the Sorbonne in Paris. She taught at Franklin Pierce High School, for 28 years.
She married Robert Marshall "Ray" Johnson II in April, 1965. They had one child (plenty, she would regularly profess), Robert Marshall Johnson III, on October 17, 1970.
In June 1985, she married Houston Eldon Ames, her loving husband for the rest of her 25 years.
She retired from teaching in June of 1993, with some of her greatest contributions yet to come. Certainly some of her most important.
She and Houston moved to Tucson in January of 2000. In 2003, her love for animals would lead her to co-found Spay and Neuter Solutions, providing low/no cost services to cats and dogs.
In the next 8 years, the organization would spay or neuter some 5,500 animals and raise more than $240,000 for animal causes. The impact she had on the lives of human beings and animals alike is impossible to quantify in so many words and so much space. So we won't even try.
On April 10, at 3:00p.m., there will be a celebration of her life at South Sound Manor, 455 North Street SE, Tumwater WA. A chance for family, friends, former students and all of those she touched throughout her glorious life to say… thank you.
In Coralie's memory, donations to Spay and Neuter Solutions will continue the incredible work she did and others are doing. Contributions will be accepted at the memorial, mailed directly to the foundation at P.O. Box 762, Cortaro, AZ 85652 or online at www.spayneutersolutions.org.

My beloved Aunt Coralie, you have no idea how much I will miss you. You have always been the rock in my life who always encouraged and rooted for me as much as my own Mom. How lucky I was to have you in my life. Not a day will go by that I won't think of your laugh and hear your voice giving me the advice I always sought from you. One hundred more years wouldn't be enough time with you. I love you!

I always enjoyed seeing Coralie at our Olympia High School class of 1958 reunions every 5 years and at a class luncheon just last fall. She will be missed - Carol Malysz Yett

I feel so fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to speak with Coralie around November when Beverly gave me her phone no. I've spent most of my years after high school, where I got to know Coralie, in Alaska and didn't get to talk to her very much. She is remembered for her good nature and lots of laughter. I will miss her lots. Jerry Lehman

My memories of Aunt Coralie's laughter filling a room at Ocean Shores will never fade. Her sense of humor was awesome and her cooking was legendary! She was a wonderful, loving aunt to me and I will forever smile when I think of her.

TO MY SISTER CORALIE:

THE 'GANG OF FOUR' IS MINUS ONE, SO SADLY. I WILL SHARE THIS POEM AT THE MEMORIAL ALSO;

NOT TOO TALL BUT SURELY STOUT
AND TO HER FAMILY SO DEVOUT

IN KITCHENS SO MANY SHE COOKED UP A STORM
AND ALWAYS, WAY OVER THE NORM

SHE WAS A TEACHER PAR EXCELLENCE
WITH PLENTY OF INTELLIGENCE

AT THE UW AND PARIS SHE LEARNED SO WELL
AND TAUGHT HI SCHOOL FRENCH FOR A VERY LONG SPELL

BEAUTIFUL AND DEVOTED
EVERY DETAIL SHE NOTED

A TRAVELER TO WORLD WIDE PLACES
SHE HANDLED THEM LIKE ACES --- ALL IN

THE OCEAN SHE LOVED, WITH CLAM SHOVEL AND WIT
AND ALWAYS THE BLACKBERRIES IN HER KIT

TOUGH CROSSWORDS ALWAYS WITH MOM AND HER SISTER
AND ALL THE BLANKS THEY DID BLISTER

MOM MET HER IN HEAVEN AND BOTH ARE IN BLISS
OH COREY FOREVER, MY SISTER I WILL MISS

The three amigos
54 years ago, Corey Brassfield, Judi Jones and myself formed a bond and became tried and true friends forever. I don't believe we ever spent an unhappy moment together.
I am so lucky to have had Corey as a part of my life. So many wonderful memories. I was the only high school friend that would spend friday night at her home on Eskridge...The reason: Twila would get us up saturday morning at the crack of dawn with her famous cry, "Get your working britches on" and we would spend saturday morning cleaning house from top to bottom. The wonderful times spent at Iron Springs Resort digging hundreds of razor clams and than having to clean them all. The green lantern Tavern, Chanterelle mushroom picking, Corey winning the Twist dance contests at the Blue Moon tavern...She put Chubby Checker to shame and her punch board skills at the Local Tavern on our annual beach weekends. She was some gal. You don't say goodbye to such a wonderful person, you say, I'll see you again in heaven.

Corey was a dear friend. I looked forward to seeing her, sharing her wonderful kitty stories, and spending time in the summer on our pink patio. She loved her family, her pets and life in general. Her warmth and humor were contagious! I will always miss her.

Although the obit here in the Daily Olympian was quite well done, it didn't elaborate on your love and loyalty to your parents and siblings. Further, it did not mention your wonderful ability to produce several kinds of cookies, cinnamon rolls, and wild mountain blackberry pies (includes finding and picking the berries). All of my children were raised anticipating these treats at the family reunion (Ocean Shores) each year. What a great asset you were to the extended family. Hard-working (over achiever), yet fun to be around. None of us here will forget you, we were always impressed.

My dear sweet sister is gone from this earth to a better place. She was loved by many, but none more than her brothers and sister. She make the rest of us look bad in a lot of ways. I feel so badly and it is so difficult to believe. The attached pic is about as far back as I can remember. We were close then and remained that way until her passing. We all loved you Coralie, God Bless You!

Boy was I lucky! I was assigned a seat right next to Corey in Mr. Murphy’s typing class. It was soon apparent that we shared a great sense of mischief and as a result one day found ourselves sent to see Miss Crockett, the very prim and proper school counselor. Sitting back to back on her half-moon settee we were duly reprimanded for our nonsense. Then it happened, I felt the seat start to shake a little and I knew – she had started to giggle. Of course I couldn’t help but join in and the giggles soon became uncontrolled laughter. We did try to behave ourselves but to no avail. Finally Miss Crockett threw up her hands, looked at us with resignation and uttered those fateful words: “You two are just Good Time Joe’s.”

How right she was! From that moment on our friendship was sealed, and for the past fifty-two years we certainly lived up to our billing. What fun it was! Corey’s wicked sense of humor, her loyalty to friends and family, her wonderful smile and most of all her loving heart will be sorely missed by those of us left behind on this old planet. We are all so fortunate to have had her in our lives.

She was one of my favorite teachers. I took 2 years of French from her and also was a T.A. for her my senior year. She was a wonderful teacher and person and I have thought of her often since I graduated in 1992. My deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends as I am sure she will be missed a great deal.

I knew her as Mrs. Johnson. I had the privilege of being her student at Franklin Pierce for three wonderful years of French! At the time, 3rd year french was not offered but there were four of us who wanted to continue with French, so we proposed our idea to her and she graciously accepted. She was so incredibly kind and had a great sense of humor...always a twinkle in her eye. I graduated high school over 25 years ago and I have thought of her often. It was great to learn about her efforts with animals. My condolences to her family. She was a great influence in my life.
