Marjorie Swanzy Obituary

Marjorie Ethel Swanzy
11/26/1920 - 3/6/2011

Wife, mother, friend and retired teacher, Marjorie Ethel Swanzy completed her life journey at the age of 90 on Sunday, March 6, 2011.
Possessing a sweet and charming personality, Marge was deeply loved by her family and made many friends along the way. Marge was born as the fifth and last child to Sardin and Augustine George in Biloxi, MS, on November 26, 1920.
Marge was married to Willard Manning Swanzy, Sr. (Will), her childhood sweetheart in June, 1942, until his death in 1986. During their marriage, they had five children: Willard Manning, Jr. (deceased), Michelle Swanzy Foyt (Arthur George Foyt), Joseph Eldon (Susan Randi Kaushagen), Jeremy David, and Jon Dyne (deceased) (Carla Ann Deane). She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Because of Will's military and other career changes, the family lived many places, including Bermuda, Colorado, Texas, and Virginia, before settling in Washington State in 1966. Marge and Will lived their last years together in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Since then, Marge had resided at Panorama City Retirement Community in Lacey, WA.
Marge excelled as a student, earning a B.S. in Education from North Texas State College, Denton, Texas, on June 1, 1956, followed by graduate teaching credits earned especially at University of Washington between 1968 and 1972. After a teaching career spanning 18 years, Marge retired from Washington Middle School, Olympia, WA, in June, 1982.
Marjorie was a loving, gracious, good humoured person who will be missed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Mills and Mills Funeral Home, 5725 Littlerock Road SW, Tumwater, WA 98512 (360-357-7743).
A complete story of Marge's life with a photo gallery as well as a place to post any comments or condolences for the family will appear at http://www.millsandmillsfunerals.com.

Marge Swanzy was one of my dearest friends and closest companions during our teaching times at WMS. How I adored her gentle manner and kind way of working with our students. We spent our lunch times and after school times together as well as weekends. How I enjoyed hearing about the family experiences in the military. She had a tremendous love for her family and was so proud of all of them. When she moved to Panarama we would get together for lunch and it was always so delightful. I am so honored to have had the opportunity to have her for a very special friend. Sylvia Neff

I had Mrs. Swanzy for 7th grade "block" at Washington (Jr. High). She had her hands full with us, but kept us in line. Rest in Peace.

Mrs. Swanzy was my social studies teacher when I was at Washington Middle School in the early 1970s. She had a large, locked cabinet filled with books about Native American history and culture. I was one of those students who loved history so periodically she would give me a stack of books to take home and read. Because of her, I have a degree in Native American Studies. I have thought of her often through the years, and wished I could have told her how very important she has been throughout my life.
