Jean Smith Obituary

Jean Ellen Smith

Jean was born on January 6, 1921 in Ellensburg and passed peacefully on March 26, 2011 in Olympia. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, companion and friend.
She is survived by her companion, Edward Newman; her daughter, Gayle Sneesby; son-in-law, Ray Sneesby; adopted daughter, Twyla Nordby; three grandsons, Don (Ale), Dave (Cindy), Randy (Suzanne); four great-grandchildren, Ryan, Aaron (Sarah), Alex, and Anna.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George W. Schreiner and Edna P. Schreiner; her brothers, Ralph and Lewis Schreiner; sister-in-law, Jane; and by her husbands, Cortland Carmody and Lester J. Smith.
Jean graduated from Ellensburg High School and Central Washington College. She taught Junior High School for a few years in Yakima. She moved to Lacey and worked for DSHS from 1945 to 1979 as a caseworker and supervisor.
Jean had many hobbies: sewing, gardening, traveling, camping, fishing, and clam digging. She was an excellent bowler. Jean also collected red glass and enjoyed playing Pinochle and Cribbage.
Jean was always there to help family and friends in need. She was loved by many and will not be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 5930 Mullen Road S.E., Lacey, WA 98503.
Remembrances may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice. To leave condolences for the family, please visit www.woodlawn-funeralhome.com.
