John Sides Obituary

John Gilbert Sides

Age 62, of Silver Creek, WA and formerly of Yelm and Olympia, passed away January 22, 2011, at the Seattle Veteran's Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. John was born in Bad Wildungen, Germany on May 4th, 1948. His military family returned stateside when he was 6 months of age and settled near Fort Lewis, WA. He graduated from Yelm High School in 1966. John served with the U.S. Air Force from 1968-1971 and completed a tour of duty in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam.
He was the son of the late Opal and Gilbert D. Sides of Yelm, WA and brother of the late Jeff Sides of Spokane, WA, Janice Goudy of Philadelphia, and Joyce Buckwalter of Lancaster, PA. John is survived by his daughter, Breanna Sides, of Silver Creek, his soul mate and love of his life, Ann Matthews of Tumwater, sisters Judy J. Sides of Rochester, Joan Lassley of Graham, June Dodd and Jeanete Harmon of Tacoma, his 7 nephews, 5 nieces, and his extended family.
John was a proud veteran and his home reflects his service to his country. He was an avid carpenter, gardener, and landscaper, with many home projects in progress. He always enjoyed his cold tea, summer fishing at the lake, riding his lawn mower around his 5 acres, and playing with his daughter's miniature Nigerian goats -- he dearly loved his dog, Missy, his faithful companion of ten years. He was a member and a life long supporter of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). Donations can be made in his name to the DAV National Service Office in Seattle, WA.
A military service with full honors will be held at the Tahoma National Veteran's Cemetery in Kent, WA on February 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.

Not sure what to say?

February 1, 2011

I am so sad. John was my favorite customer at the tumwater albertsons. I loved talking to him. And after I left I thought of him often. When I did make it back down there as luck would have it I got to see him. And it was the same John. Kind words and a big hug. I will miss you John. Rest in peace

I remember John always joking around even when he had health problems. He loved his pets, especially his dog Missy. John was a very unique individual, -- talented and creative with wood working. It was a privilege to know him.

I miss him. The house seems so empty now without seeing dad and Missy running around.
