Phyllis Kuhn Obituary

Phyllis Jean Grinde Hayes Kuhn
1920-2011

Phyllis Hayes Kuhn, 90, loving wife, mother, aunt and grandmother, passed away Monday, February 21, 2011, in Lacey, Washington. Born September 23, 1920, in Yelm, Washington, Phyllis married U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John C. Hayes of Fort Worth, Texas in 1943, and they raised their three children in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Following John's military service, they moved to Phyllis's home state of Washington where they lived in Olympia and managed Capitol Lake Towers condominiums. After her husband's death in 1983, Phyllis married long-time family friend, U.S. Army Col. (ret.) U.S. Grant Kuhn III, D.V.M., in 1986, and they spent a happy retirement traveling and visiting their families and friends around the country.
Phyllis was trained in voice and was an accomplished soloist, volunteering her choral talents in community performances and church services. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Olympia, as well as the Mother Church in Boston, Mass., and a member of the Washington Chapter of PEO.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; her brothers, John Grinde of San Diego, California and Parumph, Nevada, and Robert E. Grinde of Yelm Washington; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Grinde of Yelm, Washington. Surviving family include three children, Christie Hayes Sloan (James) of Tallahassee, Florida; John Stephen Hayes (Tina) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; J. Todd Hayes (Nj) of Olympia, Washington; her sister Joan Johnson of Yelm, Washington; her granddaughter Tara Hayes of Olympia, Washington; three step-children, U.S. Grant Kuhn IV (Carol) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Gayle Kuhn Faith (Gary) of Redding, California; Thomas Kuhn, D.V.M. (Margaret) of Swannanoa, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
A private service for immediate family is planned for a later date. Memorial donations may be made to The Washington Center for the Performing Arts in Olympia, Washington or Providence St. Peter Foundation.
