LAMONT, Flynn Robert
June 8, 1956 - October 29, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Flynn Robert Lamont after a courageous yet short battle with cancer. Flynn graduated from Centennial High School in Coquitlam in 1975 and started his career as a Fireman with the University of British Columbia. He went on to a longstanding career with Vancouver Fire and Rescue. In the spring of 2015 Flynn obtained the designation of Acting Battalion Chief. One of his proudest moments with VFD was in 2003 when he was awarded the Fire Fighter of the Year by the Vancouver Junior Board of Trade Jaycees.
Flynn wore many hats. He was a longtime faculty member with the Justice Institute in their Fire and Safety Division and his area of specialization was technical rescue. Flynn was instrumental in the development of the Vancouver Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team and was one of the members selected to respond to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He was also one of the designees who was deployed to assist with search and recovery efforts in 9/11, as well as the Northshore Landslide in 2005. Flynn had a passion for training and deploying with his search and rescue dogs Barkley and Cooper, and more recently, Huddleston.
Flynn was a volunteer extraordinaire. In his early years he was very involved with Evans Lake Forestry Camp as a Junior Forest Warden; for many years, Flynn was a Big Brother; he was an active member of the Coquitlam Search and Rescue for fifteen years; and he also spent many volunteer hours taking his Search and Rescue dogs to Canuck Place, and to many classrooms throughout the Lower Mainland.
In his personal life he was an avid cyclist and participated in many races such as the Grand Fondo in Whistler. Triathlon was also one of his many passions with one of his fondest being Escape From Alcatraz in San Francisco, which he did five years in a row.
Flynn led a very full and active life. He had a wicked sense of humour and was known to many as the jokester. He always had time for his friends whenever they needed him, even when they didn't think they needed it, and was well-known for his big bear hugs. When he needed a break he headed to his brother's place near Logan Lake. There he could enjoy the quiet, let his dogs run, check out the 'farm,' and spend valuable time with his nieces and nephews.
Flynn was predeceased by his mother Grace Lamont in 1996 and his father Robert Lamont in 2004. Among the many that he leaves behind to mourn his passing are his girlfriend MaryAnne Cumming; his brother Robert Lamont and sister-in-law Judy and their children Colleen, Tammy, Blane and Drew; sister Allison Lamont and her children Kim, April, Alisha and Nicole; and his grandnieces and nephews: Cody, Megan, Amy, John, Maya, Brooke, Kora, Connor, Larissa, Daisy, Carter, and Jaxon - and true to life's cycle, his newest grandniece or grandnephew is soon to arrive.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, and a Service will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at the First Baptist Church, 969 Burrard St., Vancouver, BC at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Flynn would want you to make a donation to a charity of your choice in his memory.
