Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Feb. 14 to Feb. 15, 2014.
VAN DER HOOP, The Honourable J. Peter B.A., LL.B.
1926 - 2014
Born in Vancouver, B.C. on September 29, 1926; died February 11, 2014. Surviving are his loving and caring wife Shirley; sisters Vera Shorthouse and Pam Graham; children Shaun (Karen), David (Bonnie), Cathy (Duncan Galbraith), and Paul; and grandchildren, to whom Peter was closely attached: Heather, Julie, Jeff, and Jeremy, and great-grandson Augustus. After practicing in Penticton (1952-59) he moved to Vancouver, where he worked with the firm that is now Harper Grey. He was appointed to the County Court of Vancouver in 1978, which later merged with the Supreme Court of B.C. After retirement, he spent considerable time travelling, frequently with members of his family, until declining health confined him to his apartment. A remembrance service will be held at St. Chad's Church (23rd and Trafalgar) on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at 11 a.m. In place of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice will be welcomed.

Judge Van Der Hoop always conducted himself with dignity, and with respect for the members of the legal profession who appeared before him. He required that things be "done correctly" and was dedicated to encouraging a high standard of practice. Rest in Peace.

He was an excellent Judge (always thoughtfiul, alway courteous, always well prepared). He taught a generation of lawyers foreclosure and Chambers practice. As a colleague on numerous sessions for the Legal Education Society, he was always delightful. He is missed. Rest in peace after a well led life.
