William WONG Obituary

WONG, William Kwanda
March 9, 1922 - April 8, 2017
A wonderful life well lived and so loved by all. William Kwanda Wong passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Saturday, April 8, 2017. Born in Vancouver to Man Ming and Gung Lai Wong, Bill was a generous and kind-hearted friend to everyone throughout his life. He is survived by his beloved wife Zoe of 66 years and children Steven, Glenna (Don), Susan (Angie), Peter (Opal) and grandchildren Karen and Michael. He was the eldest of ten siblings to Jack (Evelyn), Allan, Helen, Anna, May, Irene (Lincoln), Milton (Fei), Maurice (Jane) and Carol. Uncle Bill was also loved by his many nephews, nieces and extended family. Bill graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1948 at UBC. With his brother Jack they dedicated their lives to the family business at Modernize Tailors in Chinatown. He enjoyed working six days a week and was still working two days before his passing. His final measurement was for custom-made pants for baby Elliot, the newest member of the Wong family. Bill also showed his love to Zoe by sewing a heart on each pair of her new slacks. He was a thinker and problem solver who enjoyed playing bridge, golf, jogging, racquetball, drawing, art galleries and museums, architecture and design, gardening, SunDo and family travels around the world. Special thanks to the dedicated staff at Legacy Senior Living. A Celebration of Life to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chinatown Project, care of the Chinese Cultural Centre - www.cccvan.com. This reflects Bill's love of Chinatown and the cultural heritage that's been a constant throughout his life.

I visited Bill at Modernize and always had a nice chat with him. We usually reminiscence about the old days and our families.
I'll miss those visits.

Very sad to hear about Bill but reaching 95 is a great achievement. My family has known the Wong family for many years and Irene was my babysitter more than a few years ago. My condolences go to Zoe and the entire family as I think about Bill and the nice tomatoes he grew at home.

Susan,
I am so sorry to read about the loss of your wonderful father. I recall meeting him and the rest of your family, when I was invited to lively dinner parties and celebrations at your home, while we were studying architecture at UBC. My condolences to you and your family.

Sincere Condolence to the family. I have great respect for Mr. Bill Wong and feeling fortunate to have the chance to meet him in person when I bought his book A Year in China at his tailor shop.

On behalf of the Cullinane family please accept our most sincere condolences during this difficult time. My mother Bernice roomed with Zoe during their nursing training at UBC. So began a lifelong friendship between Bill and Zoe and my parents Ray and Bernice. I always looked forward to seeing Bill's elaborate Christmas cards. A number of years ago mum and I were treated to a wonderful lunch in Chinatown with Bill and Zoe. Bill was a wonderful man and I know he will be missed. I certainly have many wonderful memories of him.
