ELLIOTT, Allen Llewellyn
February 6, 1922 - December 9, 2012
Al Elliott passed away peacefully at Cairnsmore Place in Duncan, BC with family members at his side. He will be dearly missed and remembered by his loving wife of 68 years, Dagmar "Woody;" by his children Terry (Norma), Jo Ann (Larry), and Jim; by his grandchildren Derek, Deanna, Chris and Jeannie; and great-grandchild Kaz. Al was born in Bunclody, Manitoba to William and Jeannie Elliott, the youngest of five children. He met Woody while serving in the Canadian Army at Camp Shilo, Manitoba in 1943. After the war he had a long career with the H. J. Heinz Co., followed by a second career with Sun-Rype Products. Al was committed to youth and believed strongly in the power of sports, especially baseball, to bring nations together. He started working with the Babe Ruth League youth baseball program in 1957 in Victoria before being elected as BC Provincial Commissioner in 1962. In 1964, he was honored to be the first Canadian to be elected to the International Board of Directors of Babe Ruth League, Inc. and continued to serve on the board for 38 years before retiring in 2002. In January 2007 he was inducted into the Babe Ruth League Hall of Fame. In addition, Al served as President of Baseball BC for 19 years; served as a Vice President of Baseball Canada for 11 years; and served for five years on the Executive Committee of Sport BC.
