Brenda ROSCOE Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Nov. 8 to Nov. 9, 2014.
ROSCOE, Brenda Anne
Brenda age 48, died suddenly, Wednesday, November 5, 2014, from a brain aneurysm. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on October 13, 1966, (Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima's Sixth and Last Apparition), to Anthony Robert Roscoe+ (Blackpool, England) and Ilse Ingrid Roscoe+ (nee Tscheslog)(Berlin,Germany). She attended Little Flower Roman Catholic Academy in Vancouver from Grade Five to Grade Eleven. She graduated from "Lester B. Pearson" 'World College of the Pacific' on Vancouver Island in 1981: part of 13 Colleges worldwide, whose illustrious graduates include eleven Rhodes Scholars. Brenda, a convert to the Catholic Faith, studied the quadrivium at Thomas Aquinas College, in Santa Paula, California. She received a four-year Bachelors Degree in Philosophy, majoring in St. Thomas Aquinas' Dialectic Method. After graduating, Brenda Roscoe studied to be a teacher at the University of British Columbia. Unfortunately, at that time, Brenda was afflicted with illness. She was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and never recovered to teach in the classroom again. My mother cared for Brenda herself for many years without public assistance until the burden became too much for her. Brenda lived many years at Malchow House, a temporary residential group home whose goal is the treatment and supervised reinsertion of the afflicted back into our community. She graduated from there a few months ago, since she was doing better and moved to a lesser supervised group home, Sutherland House. For all who do not know: schizophrenia is a terrible affliction that tears at the very core of a person. Not all was 'dire', however. A funny point: my sister and I always laughed when our German mother pronounced the illness as "shits-o- phrenia".Indeed it was, indeed it was. Many thanks to the North Shore Schizophrenia Society for their kind help, patience, and intervention during many difficult years in West Vancouver, BC. Brenda also worked at Safeway in Caulfield for a number of years. She was known to be cheerful at the cash register. She always greeted her customers with a smile and good cheer. Please hire people afflicted with schizophrenia without discrimination. As the years went by, Brenda made sure that her mother and father both died holy deaths. With her kindness, and patience, she edified everyone who encountered her at that time. Brenda was an avid author of spy novels. She wrote several suspense novels centering on the 'Vatican and various conspiracies'. She was a devout Catholic and often attended daily and as well Sunday Mass, every week, at one of several churches: either Holy Rosary Cathedral, or St. Anthony's in West Vancouver, or St. Pius X Church in North Vancouver. She frequented the Sacrament of Confession often. She was succourred in extremis with the Last Rites and 'Prayers for the Sick and Dying' of our Holy Mother the Church, kindly administered by Father Reynaldo Usman of Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Wednesday, November 5 in the evening, before she died. Many thanks to Father Usman. Brenda Roscoe is survived by her only sibling, Keith Roscoe (49), and his wife, Susan Roscoe (nee Edenfield), and their two children, Katie Roscoe (7) and Jonathan "Will" Roscoe (6), as well as by Dr. Keith Roscoe, (brother of Anthony Roscoe), of the University of Lethbridge, AB-Faculty of Education, Hein and Irene Heide, Peter and Monika Heide (Munich, Germany), and also the Tscheslog family in Berlin, Germany and on Vancouver Island. The Wake is scheduled for Friday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. with the Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary and Prayers for the Repose of the Souls of the Dead. The Funeral Mass will be offered by Father John Horgan, Pastor, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in North Vancouver at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, followed by a Reception in the Parish Hall. The casket burial of her mortal remains will take place on Monday, November 17, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Gardens of Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery in Surrey, B.C. All are welcome to all services. Brenda was loved by most (including myself) and will be greatly missed by all for her humour and keen intelligence. May she rejoice in the Boundless Love of Her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, in Heaven for all eternity! Please pray for her. Keith's family is thankful for Fr. John Horgan, Fr.Bruce-John Hamilton, Brenda's spiritual directors, Residential Care NV, Cal, and Mina Molavi, social workers for VCH, Katherine MacDonald, social worker at LGH, the Gregorian Scola led by Mr. Ed Devita and Martin Dale (a close personal friend of Brenda's for many years), Mr. Andrew Patrus and Ms. Feven Berhane at Scotiaprivateclient, Casey Leeson at First Memorial and all Brenda's friends, and acquaintances at LFA, TAC, Lester B. Pearson, North and West Vancouver Residential Care.

Keith, I graduated TAC a couple of years before Brenda, and although I didn't know her very well, I knew her as a pious and cheerful person who was kind and considerate towards everyone. I was truly saddened to hear of her afflictions and her passing.

Dear Keith & Family,
I was so saddened to hear about Brenda this week. I spent many hours with her riding the bus to LFA, playing on the Volleyball team and doing homework. Over the years I frequently ran into her and your Mother around West Vancouver. She was a kind and gentle person and I will remember her fondly. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." John 6: 48-51

Brenda is the kind of person you could never forget. We spent several years together at TAC and I loved her curious deep thinking ways just as much as her delightful sense of humor and remarkable love for her neighbor. I am really sorry that we lost touch over the years but look forward to spending eternity together! May we all be consoled by God's great and Divine Mercy!

But glad to have sat under
Thunder and rain with you,
And grateful too
For sunlight on the garden.

Brenda was always ready with a smile and a laugh. Brenda's natural kindness was equally matched by her keen intelligence. I can remember when Brenda brought Where the Wild Things Are to an English class as a favourite of hers and later in life my first thought when asked to read that book to my children was always of Brenda. R.I.P. And you shall be missed.

Condolences to the Roscoe family, this is very sad news for sure. Brenda never thought any less of anyone who didn't have the same intelligence. I remember her patiently guiding me through a few uphill roads during school at LFA. I'm glad that you chose to her struggles in her obituary, very important. She was a rare human being. God Bless.

I always admired how hard Brenda worked and how kind she was to everyone. She was so bright and a real role model in school. I haven't seen her since we graduated but will keep her memory close for a very long time. Such a huge loss for everyone who knew her.

I have fond memories of Brenda from Little Flower Academy. She was a very kind, friendly, gentle soul. Although we lost contact when she moved on to Pearson College, I have thought of her often over the years. Please accept my condolences at this sad time.
