Al and his brother Orville joined the Army serving their country during World War II. Upon his return from the war and with an honorable discharge from service, Al went to Detroit to buy a new black shiny Ford coupe. He enjoyed new cars and owned 40 or so over the years.
In 1955, Al married Hazel who he loved and was devoted to for 50 years. He retired from the Standard Oil in Richmond after 34 years of service and they moved to Vacaville. Al liked being with people and enjoyed the Moose Lodge, particularly the trailer camping and playing cards at the Senior Center. He became a widower in 2005 losing Hazel. He also was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about the same time and battled the disease until Nov. 16, 2010, when he again found Hazel. He would always say that he had lived a wonderful life and in fact he did.
Al leaves his brother, Orville Beard and sister, Imogene Ruiz, both of Oklahoma City; stepson, Ray Cole, daughter-in-law, Joan Cole, of Elk Grove; and grandson's Brian and Jeff Cole, their wives April and Selina Cole, two great-granddaughters, Lela and Maya, plus numerous nieces and nephews. All will miss his humor and the wonderful man who cherished his Hazel.
A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Vaca Hills Chapel Funeral Home, 524 Elmira Road, Vacaville, 446-3233. Those wishing to pay their personal respects to Al may do so between noon and 2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment and military honors will be on Monday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery 522 Elmira Road, Vacaville.

I WAS ONE OF MR. BEARDS CAREGIVERS FOR ALMOST 3 YRS. MR. BEARD WAS THE MOST KINDEST,LOVING, HUMOROUS MAN. HE WAS ALWAYS HAPPY. HE WAS MY FRIEND, PAL, AND BUDDY. HE ALWAYS SAID THAT HE HAD A WONDERFUL LIFE.
HE WOULD TELL ME THE NAMES OF HIS 3 HORSES, HOW LONG HE WAS IN THE ARMY AND WHERE HE WAS STATIONED AT. ALSO HE WOULD SAY THE BEST JOB HE HAD WAS WHEN HE WAS A TEENAGER WORKING FOR A GROCERY STORE. DURING THE DAYS I WAS WITH HIM, I WOULD BRING UP HIS NAMES OF HORSES, HOW MANY YEARS IN ARMY AND WHERE HE WAS STATIONED AT AND WHERE HE LOVED WORKING AND HE WAS AMAZED HOW MUCH I KNEW ABOUT HIM AND ASKED ME HOW DID I KNOW. I WOULD SAY YOU TOLD ME AND HE WOULD HAVE A BIG SMILE HE ALWAYS GAVE. ALSO HE WOULD SAY AND I BRING IT UP TO HIM HOW FAST HE WAS ROPING A CALF IN 8 SECONDS WHEN HE WAS IN THE RODEO IN TOWN AND HE WOULD SHOW ME HIS NEW COWBOY BOOTS AND THE COWBOY HATS HE WORE.. ALSO HE ENJOYED GOING TO GARAGE SALES WHEN WE TOOK HIM AND HE WOULD LOVE TO HUG THE LADIES THERE AND TELL THEM HOW BEAUTIFUL THEY LOOKED. HE ALWAYS HAD KINDS WORDS FOR EVERYONE. I ALSO ADMIRE RAY HOW HE SPENT TIME WITH HIS DAD AND MADE SURE IF WE HAD ANYTHING MR. BEARD HE WOULD GET IT. RAY ALWAYS MADE SURE MR. BEARD WAS TAKEN CARED OF. I WILL ALWAYS SPECIAL MEMORIES OF MR. BEARD. HE WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON AND WILL BE GRATEFULLY MISSED BY ALL OF US AND THE LIVES HE TOUCHED. I WANT TO GIVE MY SYMPATHY TO RAY AND HIS FAMILY AND ALL OF MR. BEARDS FAMILY AND RELATIVES. GOD BLESS YOU ALL AT THIS TIME OF GRIEF.

Big Al & Ms. Hazel were very special to us and the best neighbors one could ever wish for. Al always had something humorous to share like taking Ms. Hazel for a seven course lunch. A sixpack and a burger. Al always offered to help when I was working in the yard or tinkering with one of the cars.
He was a very special man and we will miss him deeply. We know he's with his sweetie now.
