Nathan "Spike" Schrader passed away on Dec. 19, and it was with great sadness that we watched our beloved dad lose his courageous battle with cancer and dance his way into heaven.
Nathan William Schrader was born in Farmington, Mont.
He was employed by the Montana Power Company in Great Falls, Mont., for 46 years. After retiring, he and his wife Gladys moved to Vacaville, Calif., in 1982.
They enjoyed camping and spending time with their children and grandchildren in California.
After his wife passed away in 1994, he became interested in woodworking and attending senior dances several times a week. He liked to be called "Spike." He got great pleasure from giving away his oven pulls to people he saw frequently and to unsuspecting strangers as a random act of kindness.
He was a kind and caring person who cared deeply for his family. He was an inspiration to all of us as he battled his cancer.
He touched many lives with his kindness and surprise gifts of his oven pulls or his bag of chocolate treats.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, in 1994; and his son, William Jon in 1993.
He is survived by his half-sister, Patty Riegel of Spokane, Wash.; daughter, Natalie Williams of Rio Vista, Calif.; daughter, Robin (Clyde) Carpino of Fairfield, Calif.; grandsons, Cody Carpino of Auburn, Calif., Todd (Sarah) Carpino of Simi Valley, Calif., and Colby (Sheri) Schrader of San Diego; granddaughter, Kelly (Josh) Kreutzen of Fullerton, Calif., and great-granddaughter, Tegan Carpino of Simi Valley, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, Dec. 26, from 2 to 5 p.m., at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main St., Vacaville, Calif., followed by a funeral on Monday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. at McCune Garden Chapel, (707) 448-6546.

Dear Natalie and Robin, I was perusing the Trib in regard to my Mom's obit and saw your Dad's. Mom (Alyce Rozett) passed away Nov. 29. I suspect our folks are neighbors again in heaven! Also, I didn't know of your Mom and Billy's passings. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Know that when I think back to our growing up days, I remember the Schraders with a smile and a warm place in my heart. May God bless you both. Sincerely, Stevie (Rozett) Erving, Helena, MT [email protected]

I was one of those strangers who ran into Spike in the parking lot of my work. We had a brief conversation and I was struck by how nice he was. I was taken back at first when he offered to give me one of his oven pulls. I was surprised that he would offer a gift to a stranger and that he had them with him just in case he had the opportunity to share. I still tell people about the sweet man I met. You have my sympathy for your loss.

I used to see Spike walking around my neighborhood a few years ago. He was always so friendly. I am also a recipient of one of his oven pulls. I was very touched when he gave it to me. What a kind thoughtful man. I kept the label he wrote, on the oven pull. It brings a smile to my face when I take it out of the drawer. Condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear of Spike's passing. I was the league secretary on his bowling league and enjoyed visiting with him every week. I am also a proud ower of one of his oven pulls and use it all the time.
