Stella Pecorella Obituary

Nov 5, 1923 Ð Jan 1, 2011

Stella Fortunata Pecorella passed away at Vaca Valley Manor, Vacaville, Calif., where she was under the loving care and treatment of Maria Nosce and her wonderful family after a lengthy illness.

Stella was born in Fresno, Calif., to Phillip and Vera Curtola. Later, during her teenage years, her mother and father moved to Vallejo, Calif., where her father built the Barrel Club in 1938 just before the beginning of World War II. After the war ended, Stella worked as a volunteer at the naval hospital on Mare Island. It wasn't long before she met the love of her life and became married to, Marine Pvt, Vincent (Jim) Pecorella who was being treated for wounds received at Guadalcanal. They had two children, James and Dennis.

A child of the depression, she often spoke of the rigors of farm life while they lived in Fresno. The stories revealed hardships as well as joyful experiences of Italian immigrant families working hard together and also playing hard together. The first generation children, of which Stella is a part, used that same spirit of cooperation to help the communities where they lived. They serve as an inspiration to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Stella is survived by her two sons, Jim and Dennis. In addition she also leaves behind four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be hled at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17, at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main Street, Vacaville, 95688. In lieu of any flowers, Stella requested donations be made to Disabled American Veterans as follows: By mail DAV Memorial Program P.O. Box 14301 Cincinnati, Ohio, 45250-0301 Online:http://www.dav.org/donate/MemorialHonoraryGifts.aspx or Call 1-877-426-2838 Ext. 3302. I spent quite a bit of time at Jim and Stella's in my teens and early 20s. Stella was always cooking and feeding Dennis's friends. She did that with immense joy. Stella was a great lady. My sympathy goes out to her family.

I always enjoyed visiting with Stella. She was an inspiration to me in many ways and had such an easy smile and warmth about her. I have thought of her so many times over the years and wished I could have visited with her. I will keep her and all of her family in my prayers. Take care.
