Born to the well known (in Limestone County) Ceburn Theopholis Medders and the lovely Lula Mae in the undistinguished town of Van, Texas, on July 19, 1930, Macrina, the monastic and teacher, Day at a time when bread was five cents a loaf, AIDS and cholesterol had not been invented and when a good cigar was a harmless pleasure.
A child of the depression, he grew up in Texas, New Mexico and California with siblings Welby, Gearld, Joy and Joe.
He married Barbara Buchanan, who for 58 years endured with aplomb and great forbearance every cock-a-mamie adventure Jim could devise. He laid Europe at her feet and Latin America was her oyster, so he said. All this, while he and Barbara raised three pretty neat kids, Kimball, Els and Eric.
He was a dedicated educator and Spanish-German language buff. A shameless liberal, champion of the lost causes and an avid environmentalist with a passion for birds. Proud member emeritus of Santa Clara High School, U.S. Peace Corps, the Episcopal Church and the Western Lamp Club.
Preceded in death by those who died before he did, and survived by those who didn't. Goes to the reward with the certainty that there will be no more dental visits, flu shots, IRS audits nor lost luggage. Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Jim and his wife Barbara have made their home in Vacaville, California since 1980. This obituary was written by Jim and really shows that he never lost his sense of humor. He was promised that this would be printed in the paper for him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Epiphany Church, 300 West St., Vacaville, CA 95688; or The American Cancer Society.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 11, at 11 a.m., at Epiphany Episcopal Church, 300 West St., Vacaville.
