Sandra May McCullough passed away on Dec. 28 after battling a long, debilitating illness.
Born Sandra May Grady, she was better known to friends and family as Sandy.
Sandy was born on Nov. 20, 1945, in Vacaville, on Elizabeth Street. She was raised and educated in Vacaville. Sandy made Vacaville her home for the better part of her life. She worked at various jobs throughout her life; starting out as a nurse's aide at Windsor House, then traveling as a home health aide helping homebound people in the surrounding areas. She also worked at the Rec Room for many years, where she was affectionately known as "Mom" to many of the youth that visited the local arcade and billiard room. From there, Sandy went to work as a bartender at Vic's Pioneer Bar as well as other bars. Sandy finally found her niche when she started working at Digger's Deli in Vacaville. She loved working at Digger's, helping to serve the people of the town where she lived. Sandy continued to work at Digger's until she was befallen by a series of strokes that made it impossible for her to work.
Sandy enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and riding motorcycles, especially Harley Davidsons. She was a voracious reader; had a passion for movies from animated to classics, action to musicals and science fiction; played in several dart and pool leagues; enjoyed dancing and loved anything Disney.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Clifton H. Grady and Cora M. Grady of Vacaville.
She is survived by her three children, Robert "Bob" J. (Patty) Hope, Thomas C. (Melissa) Hope and Katreena Smallwood, all of Vacaville; her grandchildren, Robert Hope Jr., Tracy Onate, Bonnie Hope, Nathan Hope, Alex Hope and Miranda Hope; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Evon Grady of Vacaville; and her sisters, Joy Gloria of Vacaville and Betty Huff of Searcy, Ark.
Sandy will be terribly missed by her family and friends, but fond memories of her will live on forever in our hearts.
A visitation will be held at Nadeau Family Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. Sandy's funeral will be held at Nadeau Family Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 7, at 1 p.m. with a committal service following at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
