G. Thompson Obituary

Aug. 7, 1922 - Oct. 20, 2010

G. Douglas (Doug) Thompson, a life-long Vacaville resident, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and son by his side on Wednesday morning, Oct. 20. Doug was born in Oakland, Calif., on Aug. 7, 1922 to Vacaville residents Frank and Elsie Thompson. He graduated as Valedictorian with the Vacaville High School Class of 1940.

Doug met his future wife, Suzanne Dopkins, while attending the University of California, Berkeley where they each earned Bachelor of Arts degrees. They only spent 3 months together before Doug left to begin his WWII service in the European theater. After several years serving as a U.S. Army lieutenant, Doug came home, reunited with Suzie and began his study of law. Upon graduating from Hastings Law School, Doug married Suzie and returned to Vacaville. Doug practiced law in Vacaville for 44 years and was a partner in the law firm of Dobbins, Weir, Thompson and Stevenson. Doug was very active in the community, including service on the Vacaville school board and the board of the Vacaville Museum. But it was The Vacaville Rotary Club where he was active for the longest period. Doug was known to all as an honorable man, a civic leader, a trusted counselor and loving family man. He was truly blessed and will be truly missed by his family, friends and the community at large.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years, Suzanne Dopkins Thompson, and his three children: Michelle Thompson Winchester (Tim) of Piedmont, Calif., Melissa Thompson O'Connell (Bob) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Dana Thompson (Joanna) of Vacaville, Calif. and Portland, Ore. Doug is also survived by his grandchildren, Josh, Amelia, Danielle, Amber, Lauren, Ted, Cecily and Stormie, and by his great-grandchildren, Quintana, Casey and Cyrus.

A memorial service for Doug will be held on Friday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Baptist Church, 401 West Monte Vista Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent in Doug's memory to the Rotary Foundation, c/o The Vacaville Rotary Club, P. O. Box 5593, Vacaville, Calif., 95688.
