Johnny Scruggs Obituary

Sept. 3, 1940 - Feb. 2, 2007

Johnny Scruggs Jr., passed away Feb. 2, 2007, with his wife, Kathy, and close friends by his side. John grew up in Richmond and attended Richmond schools. He received his AA in journalism from Contra Costa College, where he excelled in all sports and was recruited by the Baltimore Orioles Organization to play pro-ball. He also attended Cal State Hayward. Later, he was recruited by and worked for the Richmond Unified School District where he was a school police officer for many years, receiving recognition for his distinguished service to the students and the district. He then went on to become furniture warehouse supervisor with W.C.C.U.S.D., retiring after 28 years with the district. John would want to be remembered most for his union activism as a leader and officer of Public Employees Union, Local One and his love of gardening, extraordinary cooking, barbecuing talents and fishing.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Katherine D. Scruggs; mother, Geneva Scruggs; mother-in-law, Ophelia Head; brother, Herbert Scruggs (Annie); sister, Betty Alecia; three surrogate sisters, Frances McCullough (Leo), Jewell Jacobs (Jacob) and Mary Henderson (Glen); sisters-in-law, Yvonne Head, Delia Head, Deborah Rose (Richard), Frances Head and Mattie Fuller; brother-in-law, William Head; nephew, Kenneth Scruggs who was raised along with him; as well as a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Johnny was preceded in death by his father, Johnny C. Scruggs; and one surrogate sister, Marlene Hudspeth; and a brother-in-law, Albert Fuller.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, and a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Civic Center Chapel of Wilson & Kratzer Mortuaries, 455 24th St., Richmond. A committal will follow at Rolling Hills Memorial Park, Richmond.

I was privileged to meet John Scruggs when I was a new, young, and very
green business agent for Local One circa 1984. He was one of the rank-and-file leaders from whom I learned the ropes. He was a fierce advocate for his fellow workers, an extraordinary barbecuer, and his sense of humor and sometimes gruff manner could never fully hide his compassionate heart.

John had put baseball behind him by the time I met him, and while I
knew he'd played professionally it took me some digging to find the
specifics: he played with Rochester of the International League in
1966-67 and with Portland of the Pacific Coast League in 1968-69. His
finest seasons were with Aberdeen in 1963-64 when he hit 22 and 23 home
runs.

Over the years, I've run into many JFK grads who remember John's
imposing--and reassuring--tenure as their school's police services
officer. I think it's pretty remarkable that 20 and 30 years later, he remains an unforgettable part of their high school memories.

My deepest sympathies to John's family and extended family in WCCUSD
and Local One in the wake of this untimely loss.
