I relieved Clay as Navigator aboard the USS CONCORD (AFS-5). He was a wonderful friend and incredibly funny. We often would relieve each other as Officer of the Deck. After going through the ritual, Clay would announce to the Pilot House, "Attention in the Pilot House, this is Lt. Hayden. I'm on the deck and I have been conned." After he left I used the same announcement when I took the Deck. I remember that he broke his ankle while jogging on the ship on the way back from the Med. He was given the honor of being OOD for the entry into our home port, Norfolk, VA. He had a "boot" on his leg. We navigated to the anchorage where ships off-loaded weapons before going pier side. We ran into fog just prior to getting to "Whiskey Anchorage." I, as Navigator, had to ensure that we hit the anchorage like a bulls-eye. I knew when we had lost visuals on all of the aids to navigation and calculated in my head when we should slow and then stop and drop anchor. Clay trusted me, because we'd done this before in Palermo, and aced an anchorage for grade by Sixth Fleet. As it turn out, I told Clay when to go to All Stop, when to go Back Two-thirds, again go All Stop, then when to drop anchor. Almost coincident with dropping the anchor, the fog lifted. I directed that the Quartermasters take a round of bearings to verify our position. Turns out we were dead-center in the anchorage. Our Skipper asked me "How the hell did you do that?" I told him Zen Navigation, Captain, Zen Navigation. Clay transferred soon after that. I lament the fact that we never got back together. He taught me a lot. Villanova should be very proud of him.

With tremendous sadness in my heart, I offer condolences and prayers to Clay's family. Clay was the ultimate "gentle-man", filled with love and humor. His musical prowess and commitment to his choirs is a testimony to the greatness of his character. I will miss him dearly and pray that the love of family will ease your pain, comforted by happy memories.

I only met Clay a few weeks ago and instantly liked him. He joined our EFM group at St. James Church (Langhorne)in September and in just a few short weeks contributed so very much. We will all miss him. Heaven has a new musician and singer in their choir. Rest in peace, Clay.
