Roy Wharton Obituary

ROY WHARTON Roy Wharton, 83, left this world peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, November 7, 2010, at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Born in Pittsburgh, Roy served his country during WWII on the USS Jason and Blackhawk. Upon his return, he married Lillian Yockel, his loving wife of 63 years. He was a devoted family man, a Mason, and avid Steelers fan. Roy's special talent, perfected during his 38 years as a barber, was the 'gift of gab'. From retirement to Nags Head, NC and subsequently Bethlehem, Roy's humor brought endless joy to family and friends. He was a proud member of North Hills Masonic Lodge 716, and during retirement served as chaplain of Lodge 521 in Manteo, NC. He was also a member of the West View VFW, Post 2754. Survivors include his wife, Lillian; daughters and their husbands, Karen and Robert Klingman, Janice and James Dillalogue, Debra and James Geiger, and Holly and Bruce Haines; grandchildren, Jason and wife, Dorrie, Christopher and wife, Danielle, Jennifer and husband, Ben, Emily, Abigail and husband, Justin, and Grant; great-grandson Jake; nephew, Evan Wharton and wife, Jeanney; and great-nephew, Michael and wife, Kelly. He was predeceased by his beloved brother, Evan. Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Nov. 20 at 1PM in Edgeboro Moravian Church, 645 Hamilton Avenue, Bethlehem. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made online to the following organizations: Shriners Hospital of Philadelphia or The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, Oxford, NC.

TO ROY'S FAMILY-I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM AS ONE OF THE GREATEST. I USE TO CLEAN AND DUST HIS BARBER SHOP ON BABCOCK BLVD. HE GAVE ME A FREE HAIR CUT FOR DOING THIS. I WAS ONE OF GUYS WHO STARTED HIM TO COLLECT WATCH THOBS. I GAVE HIM A FEW AND KNOW HE HAD A BIG COLLECTION. HOPING THE FAMILY FINDS COMFORT. HE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTEN.

My sympathies to the entire family. I thoroughly enjoyed the "annual visit" from Lillian and Roy. In those brief meetings, Roy always brought some light into my very long days. I had to smile when I read about Roy's special talent - the gift of gab. How true. My prayers will be with you all.

Holly, our thoughts and prayers to you and your whole family from all of us at Falcon. If a man is judged in part by how he raised his children, your father was a wonderful man.

To Roy's Family - My deepest sympathies on your loss and please know that prayers are with you at this time. So many things that so many could share about Roy. Just two quick ones from my standpoint: I was one (1) year old when my parents took me to "Roy's Barber Shop" for my first haircut. I went to Roy for the next 30 plus years (even driving back on weekends when I moved to Ohio) up until his retirement. I have been to other barbers, but there sure is no one like Roy! Secondly, when my dad was ill and was unable to leave to house, Roy would come to my parents home to cut dad's hair and would spend time visiting with my parents. You sure would not get that kind of service today. Indeed, he was a great story teller and loved to tell a good joke and always had a smile on his face. Again, Roy was a special guy! Blessings to your family from our family.

Dear Holly , We did not know your father, met him only once. But his smile lit up the room. We do know that he had to be special if he was born in Pittsburgh and a Steeler's fan. And of course that he produced a wonderful daughter like you, We were glad that the family got to be with him on his last day. We have all of you in our thoughts and prayers.
